Finished Marquee - Page 7

I just finished the graphics work on my marquee. I went a different direction with it. I needed something to match the touchscreens I already have. I am planning on using or making an aluminum framed shadowbox. This should allow me to make the frame as thin as possible. I am hoping for 1/2" or less.

Thats good one.. becuse of past experiences with them, I prefer Staples..cheaper better and more understanding staff.(atleast te Staples near me has!)

Everything is going great...just busy camping with my family and making a ton of signs for people. Have a new one for Gizmo that I think people may like too. it is a ticket booth for the 9x20. Pretty interesting so far. I have had to resort to yousendit for e-mailing everything as the files are so big now.

As promised, here's the finished marquee. The letter tracks are made from the clear plastic pieces used in cheap poster frames, drimmeled down to size and hot glued to the glass. Couldn't find any 2" letters, but these are 2" letters with a blank area 1/2" on top and bottom, which I've cut off. Got them on eBay.

Used 18 feet of rope light to back light. Shadowbox is 16x20.

UPDATE: Now the attached photo shows it in its place on the wall.

Here's a question. I recently tried to print one of these out at fedex/kinko's and they refused because it contained company logos (ie sony, toshiba, etc) and they have a policy against printing, even if it was for personal use.

Anyone have a problem similar to mine and how did you get around it (short of removing the images, that is)?

No problems printing company logos. More than likely the guy behind the counter didn't know how to work the printer. I have seen this and other BS excuses used when needing large prints. Tell him to print it or show you the rule in writing that says why they wont.

There has been mention of someone else running into that problem (Post #159). A friend of mine had an issue trying to print up Shrek 2 tickets for last weekend at Kinkos as well. I think they went up to Office Max or something and got it printed with no problems.

Got mine printed at a mom-n-pop independent printer. Same place I used to print the side cabinet artwork and bezel for my arcade game I built....

In the past, I have had problems getting custom DVD case artwork printed @ Kinko's. They are tough on stuff like that, which is why they don't get my business amymore...

Hey guys. First let me say Volley does excellent work. I bought a print from him a while back and I get tons of remarks about it.

I have been thinking about buying a print from a HT online retailer, but now I am thinking I would like to put the print in a light box as I have done with Volley's print, and I'm not sure how good it will look in a light box. sample print seen in link below...

Using shadow boxes and rope light, how is everyone diffusing the light to spread evenly over the image and not seeing the rope light itself?

I used 18 feet of rope light, so it i pretty densely wound onto the back of the shadowbox. Having the box with a good depth helps, too, so the rope isn't too close to the artwork & glass.

Steven, what was the size of your box again? What kind of paper was your sign printed on? I just started playing around with a little shadowbox tonight and 6 feet of rope light and it seemed to generate some good heat; have you had any problems with excessive heating?

shadowbox is 16X20. I'm not sure of the type of paper. I explained to the printer my intentions and he chose the correct material. Is is paper, though, not thin plastic like restaurants use for their "translight" signs in their menuboards.

i haven't had it on long enough yet to notice potential heat generation problems.

How deep is that box? I picked up a 8x10 shadowbox just to try it on a small scale and it was only about an inch deep.

How did you adhere the rope light to the removable rear panel?

Ha! First off Ken from Stargate is a great guy who provides some good deals for us HT nuts on a budget. $50 isn't so far out of the question for this type of thing. I am not looking to tackle something with that much work behind it especially with summer coming up here.

Part of thing to remember is the quality of the display is all based around paper thickness, dye saturation, and quality/color of the light used. The diffuser panel I tried did help, but not greatly. In the end I needed two prints. So unfortunately it all depends on how good of a print they give you.

Finally got it to work. First, I used photoshop and re-saved it as a pdf file. Then I took it to Staples and for $5.00 they printed it out for my on glossy paper.

It looked great! Thanks guys!

Now I'll try to do it again but insert logos this time LOL

Total box depth for a 16X20 box is approx. 2 1/2 inches.

The 18 foot rope light package came with some little plastic clips and tiny screws. I bought an additional package of 12 clips and just screwed them into the back board. Then I used a drimmel to cut off pointy screw tips that stuck out the back side of the board.
