Need Help, Upconverting DVD player or Xbox 360 HD-DVD player??

Thread Starter
I got a new new Samsung LCD HDTV model LN4095d that does 1080p resolution. Not to get into all the details on buying a tv experience, my question really goes to playing DVD's on this TV. I really want to try and hope to get the best picture possible for this TV for what it can do. I have many, and many DVD's (500+) and I like to make sure I am using a good quality DVD player to play the DVD's that I have. The one I am using now is just the xbox 360 player and what I have heard is that it does an ok job with DVD's and that a stand alone DVD player will do much better (correct me if I am wrong)

So that comes to my question...should I get an upconverting DVD player such as the sony or oppo dvd players that from what I read are very good and does a good job with image and picture quality. I know from reading somewhere that all DVD's only have a 480i format and the reason its better than standard is the source is better as well as most DVD player can convert it well into progressive (480p). I also know that even though getting an upconverting DVD player will not add new details in picture quality of the DVD but may help increase details that are there already, finer lines, sharper edges, better color and less microblocking/screendoor effect(??)...correct me if I am wrong. From what I am reading it looks to be a good idea, but 2nd thoughts.

2nd thought is the HD-DVD add on for the 360. For $200 it sounds like a good deal plus with a free HD-DVD movie. I am not ready to go out and spend 500+ for an HD-DVD player or Blu Ray unless I know for sure that the format war is done (my opinion is HD-DVD). But how does this add-on player fair with taking standard DVD's??? does the player help increase picture quality or is it the same as it was without? If its not going to increase picture quality then probably should just get the upconverter till format war is over. Has anyone tried the HD-DVD addon for the 360 and can see a difference with it compared to just the standalone system?

I am just trying to get the best picture possible out of the new TV that I have...right now have just standard cable and it looks alright, but know when HD kicks in one day, it will look a whole lot better. 360 games look really clear and picture is great (using component with 1080p output, vga looked too washed out for me).

Let me know what your opinions are and what is probably the best solution, get an upconverting DVD player, and hopefully there will be a lot better picture quality in that, or go for the 360 HD-DVD add on and get some (if it does) picture quality as well as get HD-DVD movies to watch sometimes, thanx for all the input and opinions.

PS..I am posting this on the standard DVD forum, xbox 360 forum and HD-DVD forum...thanx

well I have this problem myself and the answer is.... toshiba HD-DVD player that does it both, and very good!
but if you cant afford this ( like me ) you have to choose and you say you want the best possible picture and that is without doubt to buy an addon, but that means starting from scratch buying movies again and if you have a large DVD collection I say buy a good upscaler ( the denon 1930 kicks ass! ) and enjoy what you already have at home!
a DVD like the 1930 when upscaling in perfect pixelmapping makes the step up to HD-DVD much smaller!

HD DVD's look great on my XBox 360 HD DVD add-on. $200 seems like a bargain, mine even came with a remote and King Kong HD DVD (which I did not like, oh well.)

Sahara, in particular looks fantastic.

Just got the Sony DVP-NC85H upconverter. You can get it at Circuit City for 105 after a rebate. I played The Longest yard (Wide Screen Edition) through my Sony and it looks great.. Just about takes up the whole screen without stretching everything. Then I played it through my xbox 360.. Of Course it didn't take up the whole screen since i had the tv in natural mode but then i switched it to full mode.. everything looked like it was being stretched (I'm very anal when it comes to picture). Anyway DVD's look much better when played through the Sony over the Xbox. Another thing I noticed was when I played Mean Girls (Full Screen Edition) through my Sony the main menu covered the whole screen but the actual movie didn't cover the whole screen. Then I played Mean Girls through my xbox and the picture looked better in my Sony..
Anyway since it seems like you don't want to spend to much money I say you go with an upcovert DVD player, especially since all HD DVD's are normally $25 or more..
Just remember your gonna need an HDMI cable.. Don't be fooled by those $100 HDMI cables at circuit city

I also considered getting a 360 Add-On (and I only have 40 DVD movies in my collection). $200 is a GREAT deal for the add-on, but I am not sold on HD-DVD coming out as the winner in the format war (just a gut feeling).

So I bought the up-converting Denon 557 (after returning the Sony 75H) and am very pleased with it's PQ. But my TV doesn't support 1080p, so in your case you might wanna consider an up-converting player that supports 1080p. There are many out there, but i think the one that gets the most praise (for 1080p) is the Oppo 981.

Good luck.
