Cabling Question for HD1000U

post #1 of 2

Hello all -

I know that ultimately I will have to pay the price for my lack of vision and somehow add an HDMI cable to my projector ceiling mount location (should have run conduit or an extra cable 2 years ago when I built the room...live and learn), but I am trying to use what I already have if possible:

I have a 33' M1(D1)-to-DVI cable that is hard-wired into my wall. It can't be removed without considerable expense and hassle; and finding adapters or gender changers for M1 is difficult at best. I have successfully used this cable with DVI-equipped DVD players and OT-STB's. I have also used it with a PS3 using a DVI-to-HDMI. Monoprice is the only place I have seen that even offers an M1 (female) to HDMI (male) adapter for this cable - but it seems to be on permanent backorder (since at least December).

I have found multiple places that have M1 (female) to VGA (male) adapters, my question is whether or not it is possible to use the VGA input (analog) with the following:

HD1000U <--- VGA(male) - M1 (female) <---> M1 (male) ---------- DVI (male)<-- Source Material (Motorolla STB - DVI out)

I am pretty sure that such a thing would not work due to the lack of a digital to analog converter in between the source and the display, but can anyone verifiy that for me? And if such a connection is impossible, would a DVI-VGA adapter at least allow me to use the M1-DVI cable or should it be removed altogether and sold with the 4805?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help clear this up for me.

I've got a long DVD-to-Infocus 4805 cable as well, and I'm about to upgrade to a non-Infocus 720p projector that will (probably) only have HDMI hi-def inputs, so I'm interested in this too.

[Ignore rant about using non-standard connectors in the first place. For the last year every time I've wanted to plug my laptop into the projector I've had to get a ladder and unplug the DVD to swap out the connctors -- because NOBODY makes an M1-D switch or splitter.]

It looks like Monoprice is still backordered (As of March 1, 2007), so I signed up for email notification when the adapter is back in stock. Maybe if enough people do the same, Monoprice will order some more.
