Sounds pretty cool to me...

People will be able to download "all kinds of digital content to their PlayStation 3 - not just games but movies, music, HD, standard definition TV," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe chief Phil Harrison told the games website 1UP

Downloading 50 Gigs would take a month !!!

Yep, it will take a long time to download an HD movie to play. This feature already exists on Xbox Live for the 360. We downloaded Swordfish in 720p and it took at least a half day to get the file using cable broadband.

At my broadband speed, about 10 hrs., I think I'll pass

It doesn't take much longer for Netflix to deliver a disc.

Oh I agree downloadable HD isn't ready for primetime (yet). However I find HD on demand via cable systems rather nice and at some point it's going to stick. You might have to wait a bit for the download but at least they will never be out of stock. Right now I think all they are concerned about is covering everyone else regarding SD content.

They need to figure out how to let PS3 download in the background. If they do, then I don't mind letting the machine download something overnight or while I am watching another movie. Lack of multitasking capability is a serious oversight for PS3.

They have gone on record that background downloading is coming this march.

LOL, I agree though.

It will be interesting to see if Disney will allow its content on there or whether it will be exclusive to Apple's iTunes.

And the XBox 720p downloadables are much more compressed than any movie on Blu-ray or even HD-DVD. I think most of the files are under 5GB or so (maybe way under).

I've downloaded several TV shows from Xbox live in hidef. The shows are at 720p and are probably 1.8 - 2.3 Gb for a standard 42-45 min TV show. Movies are around 4-5 Gb. I can download a show in approx. 30 minutes ( I've never timed this ), but you can start watching at about 5 minutes into the download. The quality is very good, better than what broadcasts over my Time Warner cable, and my cable provider is pretty good. I read an article that compared some of the movies on Xbox live with their HD-DVD counterparts, and the visual differences were not that great.

Much to my surprize I agree. The HD movies and TV shows I have downloaded look much better than I expected. The compression they are using is excellent and artifact free.

That's right. We are NOT going to be downloading 50GB movies. The download services for both Xbox 360 and PS3 for movies are going to hit between 4-9GB, with most of them about 5GB. Obviously, the more stable the server and the better your personal internet connection, the faster you'll get the file. With the backround downloading firmware coming, this won't be a barrier at all. It's a good way to get those HD movies that you aren't really gung ho about buying the disc and its a great way to get music videos.

I can definitely see where this might be the future fo Hidef video in 5-10 years, but I'm sure videophiles may disagree. Internet service will get faster and compression techniques will get better. However I doubt we will see 1080p downloads or cable broadcasts anytime in the next decade.

That's cool.
I just hope they distribute Universal movies, as I can't get them on Blu-Ray.
Other than that I will stick to Netflix.

Not to belabor the obvious, but I guarantee you that we will not be downloading ANY movie file greater than 4 Gig in size UNLESS Sony first allows us to format the internal hard drive (and external hard drives) using the NTFS file system. Using FAT32, the maximum file size for any file on your PS3 system (other than a file on a blu-ray disk) is 4 GB...

They don't have to be one file though. They will probably have some special app that plays them (outside the XMB), with the movies split up into multiple files.

That will be a hack!! I believe FAT32 is being used since it is pretty open and licensed and a whole bunch of third party companies outside of Microsoft can read and write to this format without using Windows.

However, NTFS is microsoft's proprietary system and they have not licensed it. That is why linux, mac os x can read from the system (through hacks obviously) and not write (very dangerous since it is not documented and licensed).

I would rather stay away from Microsoft and just use another open system like UFS or XFS or something like that.

How would it be a hack? DVDs work this way. The movie is split into files up to a gigabyte in size, but using the player, it still plays straight through with no break (aside from maybe the layer change).
