I have read as many posts as I can find on these forums.
I am looking for an upsampling DVD player for my Sony KD-34XBR970 CRT television. I am planning on also purchasing an Onkyo or Denon receiver with HDMI on it. I am currently considering an Oppo and Denon DVD players.
The audio will be handled by the receiver, so from my understanding, any DVD player from either will handle the audio fine, because it will simply be passing of bits to the receiver.
I am not interested in a HD DVD player.
So the key issue becomes picture quality. My budget for the DVD player would be not more than around $500. There seems to be some differing opinions on which mode is better to drive this CRT, 480i vs. 720p vs. 1080i.
Oppo's opinion is that the Meditek chips are better at interlaced ouput than progressive, which they say the Faroudja chips are better at. I can not find a definitive answer to whether my CRT would be likely to exhibit the macroblock enhancing issue.
I am leaning toward getting a Denon DVD player if I get a Denon amp because buying more sophisticated remote control is not a good option for me (I have young children in the house and remotes are frequently lost and/or broken). I am thinking that being able to control the Denon DVD player with the receiver's remote control would make usability much easier.
Any thoughts?
Is anyone of the opinion that the Faroudja based Denon DVD players are as good as the Oppo players in PQ and passing the DVD player benchmark tests?
Thanks,
Abe
