Yamaha HTR-6090

So I just picked this up at BB for a steal of a price ($500) open box. There was no manual, no remotes, and no microphone. Oh yeah, I also got a $120 gift card...so I'm going back tomorrow to get a Logitech Harmony remote. Does anyone have the microphone that is supposed to come with this unit that I can purchase, or do you know where I can get one?

I was really excited at how good of a deal I got on this unit...it was definitely a mis-marked item (was supposed to be 999, not 499.) I guess this is one of the times I'm thankful no one there knows what they're doing...

With that $120 gift card I picked up the $150 Logitech Harmony 670 remote. Very unimpressed. It's so much easier to control my tv and HD DVR cable box with the original remotes. I imagine such is the case with the receiver--haven't played with it at all because I have no speakers to run at this moment.
I hate losing functions of the original remotes when getting a universal, I thought this would be a surefire way not to have to worry about it. While most of the functions are accessible, it requires scrolling through 6 "pages" of options on the tiny lcd screen. I think I'll just get the original Yamaha remote(s).
My vote is for a thumbs down on the remote, I know many users swear by it. I like having separate Device buttons that don't automatically turn on and off different sources when switching between "watch a movie" and "watch tv" or "listen to music". Even my BIG mitsubishi tv remote is more simple to operate my cable box, it just requires moving a slide position selector, which is a bit outdated...funny considering the tv is less than 2 years old.

I came across a 20% off of open box items coupon from Best Buy. I can't seem to find it on their site. There is a HTR5990 at my best buy open box. No manual, no microphone. They do have the remote. It must have been a display model. Lots of scratches on the back - especially near the HDMI ports. Some small chips on the top edges too. They want $599 with a $100 gift card. They won't negotiate. I have the 20% coupon printed out but I still think it is not a good deal because this is the 5990 that is already at close out prices everywhere. The physical condition of it is worse than my 3 year old Denon. BB won't negotiate price. This has been sitting in their store with the marked down price for 3.5 weeks now.

Oh well. Are there any downsides to buying the 5990 instead of the 6090 if the price is right?

I would contact Yamaha. You can probably order those missing parts from them.

Seeing you got an open box and are missing all those items, I can't see where the price you got that for is a deal. I got mine brand new from JRs for 679 delivered in one day with full factory warranty.

Yeah, no 1080p and maybe not even any uncompressed PCM decoding.

I was actually going to buy the HTR-5990 for $550 new, shipped, from O N E C A L L .com, but I decided to look at the local BB in Hadley Mass. At this point, I'm only a little irritated not being able to control ANYTHING without the factory remote.
At first, I dealt with a guy who kind of knew a few things about home theater, and he said the box was mismarked and after speaking with his manager the best he could do was $800. Even though it was mismarked. So I went back later when he wasn't working and brought it straight to checkout, it rang up at $999 and I pointed out the $499 open box sticker, plus a $120 gift card. I'm returning the harmony today to get an ipod nano, and I'll just try to find the original remote(s) online somewhere, Yamaha wants $75 for it. Oh, and analog sound from my HD DVR sucks (I have to buy another HDMI cable for it)

update...just got my remote in. brand new on ebay for $31.00. the only thing I have left to get is the microphone...if anyone has it that they're willing to sell it's worth $20 shipped to 01073. even if it's not yamaha (denon, pioneer, etc whatever) I'll take it.

Thanks!
