Question with PB12-NSD

I just got my sub in from SVS yesterday and i've been trying to hook it up right all morning. For some reason I have to turn the gain control on the sub almost all the way up to hear anything and even then its very faint. I tried different inputs and different modes on my receiver but still either nothing or close to nothing. My components are as follows:

receiver: pioneer VSX-D514 (soon to be replaced by Onkyo TX-SR674(whenever JR gets them back in stock)

speakers: Athena audition series (5)

Could the sub not be getting enough power? i tried 2 outlets in my basement and both shared the same results. One last thing, the cable im using to connect receiver-sub is some standard subwoofer wire i bought at best buy.

I'm learning as i go with all of this home theater stuff so any help is much appreciated.

MAKE sure you have the subwoofer cable properly in the LFE of your reciever

MAKE sure that you have the subwoofer cable properly in either the red or white INPUT on the back of the sub.

Make sure your recievers LFE channel is set to 0db.....and make sure you select that you have subwoofer on.

On the sub end......turn the gain down before something blows up...LOL turn off your crossover for now on the sub and make sure your recievers crossover is no lower than 80hz.....

try these things and let me know....

ps.......to solve the power question just plug ANYTHING into the same outlet and see if it works.....if it works fine, then you know your outlet is working ok...

ok i switched the sub output on the receiver to preout and now it seems to be working good... however i still need the gain cranked to atleast half to hear decent bass when the the receivers around -35db.

Most people are accustomed to hearing their subwoofers hot. Have you level matched your subwoofer with your speakers using a SPL meter?

If you have done this already, then it may be because your frequency response is uneven, and you may be sitting in a null.

-35db is VERY LOW

I'd say average listening of Master Volume is about -25 to -15....

Movie watching even louder ....generally -15 to -8db.....even close to 0db

Take the gain down to notch #4 (there are 9 notches)

and turn the volume on your reciever up to about -25 to -20db.

I must suggest that you get an SPL meter out and calibrate that sub......you are just running it blind right now with no idea how it is set up.. This link might help!

I have a feeling that you do not have any of your speakers calibrated properly.

Before you do anything read and learn up on proper system calibration...

It is very hard to set up an audio system by ear....Trust me I've been there. I started with basic knowledge and you have to read and keep learning.

one more question, when my receiver is on with no sound from an input, i can hear a slight hiss from my speakers that inceases if i turn the volume up. is that just a bad wiring job? im using 16 gauge wire

my receiver only goes to -3db (i havent turned it up that high with the speakers on). at -35 the speakers sound really loud and almost as if they are pushing the limit(im afraid to go higher). i know the speakers are rated at 250W power handling and my receiver is only 100Wpc, so what am i missing?

Setting your speakers and subwoofer to the same SPL level just requires an SPL meter (Radioshack is nice and cheap). It shouldn't take you that long to do and you can enjoy your new subwoofer while you are waiting for the new reciever to come.

Another resource is

You need to set your all speakers to SMALL as well. This will re-route low bass from all channels to the subwoofer.
