I am currius if any one out there that bought a PS3 just for movies, ended up playing games on it? Has the PS3 turned any non-gamers into a game player? Reverse affect maybe? Home theatre buyer into gamer?

I bought the PS3 for BD playback. I have really never played video games. I rented Need for Speed Carbon and ended up liking it. I also can't wait to get EA sports NCAA football 2008. (Just found out our 2006 QB here at Boise State is gonna be the cover boy!!!!!!!!!!!)

I have read several posts in the past say they have done the very thing this thread is talking about. I believe this maybe part of the trojan horse that BD has created. I have called it reverse affect as well. As a fanboy, gamer and one who enjoys movies, particularly BD, I am delighted to hear non gamers are embracing gaming as a result of originally purchasing a PS3 for BD only. It helps to support the possibility that BD and the PS3 is maybe the one and that is good for me and my wallet in the long run.

I remember one post was a guy relating how he downloaded the GT HD concept demo from the PS store. He said he was playing it when his wife heard the noise and walked in to see the screen. She thought it was actual video of Switzerland.

Once PS3 owners have that controller in hand, even to use just for BD playback, they get curious. I have to admit prior to reading some of these stories I didn't see that coming. Sony is not stupid and way ahead of many of us when it comes to marketing.

This is what makes the PS3 the best deal when buying a Blu-ray player. Sure, you're getting a $500 or $600 Blu-ray player, but you're also getting a video game console thrown in as a bonus.

Blu-ray player first, gaming console second. Until the format war is sorted out, I truly believe this is the intention of Sony.

You wanted games?...maybe you'll buy a movie. You wanted movies?...maybe you'll buy a game. It's a win/win situation for Sony. Either way, you'll probably buy more.

No. Xbox 360 is still my choice. Its got both content and cheap software.

I downloaded some of the demos, but don't really plan on buying any games. My neighbor bought CoD3 and I tried playing it - OMG, I have no idea how anyone plays FPS titles on a console with the joysticks, I could barely move them correctly just to see straight and move where I was supposed to go let alone actually try to shoot something. I've played a lot of FPSs on the PC, maybe I'm just used to the mouse/keyboard control.

Yeah it does take practice. At first you think you will never get the hang of it. But with practice you can actually get pretty good with a controller (athough not as good as a mouse-keyboard).

This too is my first go at playing FPS on a console. I started playing RFOM and getting used to the controller is very difficult to say the least. At first I was like OMG this is crazy but have adapted to be pretty good. I find aiming very difficult. I would agree though that after playing FPS on a PC with a keyboard and mouse the controller is just more difficult for me. I still enjoy playing RFOM.

I play the free games, and will download tekken and that driving "cops and robbers" type party game they covered in Play this month.

I'm a VERY casual gamer. I play when I can but even that isn't enough to call me a hardcore gamer. I bought the PS3 with the intentions of being dual-format. I do however have to say I'm very excited about Motorstorm next week. I have played the Demo so much I could probably run it with my eyes closed.

I bought my first game yesterday (F1), as I heard this thing can play games too! Maybe that's what the weird remote control it came with is for.....

I'm an old fart certainly not a gamer although I have several hours in the demo racing games and just might buy a game or two down the road. I'm sure I would have more hours in but with the PS3 being in my theater I feel a little guilty leaving the projector on to play games.

I'm a nongamer that bought the PS3 for BD and just finished RFOM which I really liked. I'll probably buy a few other FPS games and maybe a racing sim or two, but the PS3 will still primarily be used for BD playback. Just not enough time in the day to devote to watching movies, TV shows, sports, and gaming (and spending time not in front of a screen).

I have bought Marvel, Genji and Sonic as well as Lemmings and GripShift. We are somewhat addicted to GripShift. We are anxiously awaiting the release of MotorStorm.

The last gaming machine I had was an Atari 2600.

I've played Virtua Fighter 5, but I'm a diehard fan of that series dating back to the original in the arcade, so I always planned on trying out that game.

Motorstorm's demo was really impressive though. I may pick that one up.

I bought a 20gig model just for blue ray because I don't play any games much even when I was a kid, but did buy a game for my daughter, after a few days I return it and got the 60gig model cuz I'm taking over, playing game in surround sound on a 61 inch 1080p is nothing like those pinball machine I remembered, this is one heck of a media center console, worth every pennys, from internet to games to blueray, to demoing my work to my clients, it is too cool.

I am not a hardcore gamer by any means but have always enjoyed to play some strategy/rpg/casual games on PCs. Also, would play at times GameCube games with my kids. I purchased PS3 for Blu-Ray primarily, but soon after purchase naturally thought to explore its other functions. Ended up buying NFS Carbon and ... a few PS2 games. I still prefer PC gaming to consoles, but now have ability to enjoy games on a couple of console alternatives.

Bought my PS3 to play BD movies. Also thought it would be a good buy since it was a game machine. Have bought 3 games. See my son more as he comes over to play the games.

Now that's an angle Sony marketing can use. "PS3 brings the family together."

As for the original poster's question, yes, I bought PS3 primarily for BD playback and have spent three times as much money on games so far....

Tiger Woods Golf, which I may now have spent more time using than watching blu-ray movies! I haven't played video games since the early days when Nintendo was king of the cartridges.

I didn't spend a lot of time researching the extra features since it was purchased as a blu-ray player, but am really impressed with the ability to download demos, store music and photos and play on-line with a fellow blu-ray pal who was also persuaded to buy Tiger Woods Golf. The wi-fi feature makes everything so easy.

How, there are no games?

This happened to me. I was a big gamer when I was a kid and even through college. Then I didn't really play at all for about 5 years. Recently I got a 58" Panasonic Plasma so I bought a Toshiba HD-A2 and PS3 for Blu-Ray. I bought a few games just to see how they were but I figured after a month or so I would just be using it as a Blu-Ray player. Boy was I wrong. I couldn't believe how much more immersive games were in high definition and surround sound. I wasn't even into first person shooters but that's all I play now. Resistance and Call of Duty 3 are my favorites. I even got my friends into games again and they got PS3's and we play Resistance online. Because of the lack of games on PS3 right now I recently purchased an Xbox 360 for Gears of War and Tom Clancy titles. I think video games put a home theater to good use. I just purchased av123 Rockets to upgrade my sound. Now i just need an hdmi receiver, then subwoofer, then ...

Mostly thought I would use the PS3 as a blu-ray. I bought Resistance: Fall of Man at the same time, pretty much just to have a game and also check out the graphics. Thought it was kinda cheesy at first and only played like 3 times the first month I owned it. Finally got around to setting up the WiFi for online play and I've been hooked ever since. I just now got done playing for over 7 hours straight. Yesterday I played for almost 12 hours! Its beginning to get out of control.
