I have a new pair of Strata Minis as mains. They are full range speakers with their own powered subs, and are mainly in place to perform in 2 channel mode.
I'm trying to figure out how to best set the AVR for their use and to do supplemental duty as my HT mains.
Here is what I'm thinking:
Initially I was going to set (and did) the fronts to "LARGE" and LFE to "SUB". I figured this would let me take full advantage of the powered subs, and send only the LFE track to the subs. (dual PB12 +/2s)
Now I'm thinking this might be a better way to go: Set the mains to "SMALL". This will shut off the powered subs wherever I set the speaker crossover (each speaker has its own variable crossover) during movies and general TV viewing. If I employ the "PURE DIRECT" mode on my receiver when listening to 2 channel music, the crossover function in the receiver will be disabled, and the entire full range signal will be sent to the mains as is preferred for 2 channel listening, since these are truly full range speakers that can actually make use of the bass down to 27Hz. Not much music occurs below there anyway, so it sounds to me like I will have the best of both, right?
The reason I really want to do this is I surely don't need 2 more active, powered subs in my room with those giant pb12 +/2s. EQin'g the 4 together would be a giant pain, and way overkill anyway. I think this method will provide a subwoofer sanity check.
Pure direct will shut off the crossover in the AVR taking advantage of my speakers for 2 channel listening, and when in movie mode, the LFE and anything below the AVR crossover point will go to the subs - which are more than adequate and go down to about 12Hz.
My receiver is a Yamaha 5990.
Does this sound right? Thanks in advance.
