In-wall media storage??

If this is not in right forum-sorry.

Has anyone done or know someone that has built in-wall shelving for CDs and DVDs? My room is 12x17, so there is very little room for a media cabinet and putting shelves in closet is not available. I did see at one time here on a post someone that did this. I tried a search but to no avail. I figure with a standard wall thickness, a molding with furring strip of 1-5/8 inches is needed based on CD width. There is a website that has a shelving unit for 500 CDs to place onto a wall that could easily be put into a cut out, but I feel that I could build the shelving a lot cheaper than the $300 they want for it.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hey pauly

I just built this 6' x 6' dvd rack that will be built into the back wall of my theater room. Went to Big Orange and got 12-- 1"x8" x 6' pine boards and screwed them all together to future proof my growing dvd collection. Spent less than $100 for the wood, brackets, and backboard which i haven't gotten on yet. The shelves aren't screwed down yet either. I'm gonna wait til I get them all stained before I screw it all together.

Good Luck with your project hope it turns out well.

Here are a few pictures of the built-in media rack located in the wall just behind our home theater:

It's one of the best ideas we had when we designed the basement and Home theater.

PapaDon,

Looks great. Any worry with regard to using wood on an exterior wall in terms of mildew/mold? I want to do something similar in my basement between metal studding spaced 24" OC with enough space to recess it 6". Thanks for the feedback.

For sure - this a great idea. My space is 15x8 (8 feet wide!) so I absolutely had to make use of all available room. Luckily I had some dead space between walls where I'm hiding a steel beam:

I'm going to build some very simple cabinetry out of 3/4" MDF painted black, sized perfectly for DVDs and CDs, and then recess them into the above framing. Pick up any book or google construction plans for a bookshelf - it will probably cost you about $40 in MDF, trim, hardware and paint to do exactly what you want vs. $300.

With standard 2x4 wall framing, your cabinet would not be flush with the wall, but as long as the framing is correct, that's fine too. Recessed bathroom medicine cabinets are installed like this all the time. Good luck!

I'm pretty interested in this too.
can you please post some pictures of what's been done
thanks

BillMac, love your clean simple lines - this is exactly what I'm doing except in black and on a smaller scale. Did you use standard MDF shelf construction techniques, recess it, and trim it out with a face frame?

Thanks!

Snowkarver,

We used standard techniques but cabinet grade poplar to build the shelf unit.

Digging up an old thread, but was curious to know what others have done in regard to depth of their media storage areas? Am planning on doing something similar to the picture above. Although most of my media is now "digital", my wife still likes to get the discs and showcase them on a shelf. (We still have VHS and Cassettes ) I know that a DVD is about 7.5" deep so are folks just doing 8" or would 9" or 10" a better size shelf?

My answer would depend on where you're putting the shelves... If it's in a dedicated theater space (mine is in the theater entry, so close enough), make it just deep enough for a DVD/BD case (which is less than 7" deep). But if it's going to be in another room, I'd make it 10-12" so you (or a future owner) can use it for books or lots of other things.

I used adjustable glass shelves which works well with the blue BD cases and a cabinet light above...

Hi Jautor. I live your shelves. I took the liberty of finding your image and posting it here. I hope you don't mind.

I had an overwhelmingly hideous built-in space heater in my theatre before it became a theatre.

I've been thinking that I'll rip out the rest of the sheetrock and put in a column of media / booze / candy storage in the stud bay.

Booze & candy...a can't miss combination.
