Very interesting.

But it feels like a different forum to me now!

I find it extremely difficult to believe that a person wasn't about to return a computer within 14 days. There was probably some other reason this person was denied. Perhaps they didn't have a receipt or something. I've never had a problem returning anything to Sam's. Of course I never tried returning a tv after 10 years nor would I.

LOL, good point, Mark. I like the black background with yellow lettering but will definitely try the white background. Thanks!

They can't legally retroactively change the terms.

The bottom line at Sam's is that if you have a genuine problem and you explain it to the manager they will try to resolve it fairly. Unlike the Costco by me which has a bastard as a manager who will do anything to try to deny you a proper resolution to a problem.

Hey...

I'm a loyal Costco member here in Arizona (ergo, Waltaz...), and I'm looking to buy a 50" plasma. Specifically, the Pio 5070. Costco Home has it in stock.

Am I understanding correctly that here in AZ, the "old" (read: liberal) return policy is in effect until March 12, which is Monday? And if I buy the plasma this weekend, I'll be covered by the "old" policy? I know I can ask at the store, but I won't be there until much later today.

Also, I have no problem with the new policy. That, plus an additional two-year extension of the manufacturer's warranty (if I'm understanding THAT correctly) AND the concierge service, are good enough for me.

Thank you,

waltaz

" an additional two-year extension of the manufacturer's warranty ""

NO. 2 year is inclusive manufacturer's warranty, inclusive credit card company's extension warranty.

NO. 2 year is inclusive manufacturer's warranty, inclusive credit card company's extension warranty.

Are you sure it is inclusive of credit card company's extension? I didn't see that anywhere in the written policy. I believe AMEX match of mfg's warranty is up to one year and applies AFTER any other extension (as long as it doesn't go over 5 years).

That would give you a total of 3 years warranty if you purchase with AMEX, correct? Of course, we would also have to confirm that is the way AMEX would read it since we are not actually buying the Costco extended warranty.

Here is what AMEX says:

If you purchase an additional service contract or extended warranty with a product which is otherwise eligible
under the Buyer's Assurance Plan, and the combined coverage provided by both the original manufacturer's
warranty and the purchased service contract does not exceed five years, then the product is eligible for coverage
under the Buyer's Assurance Plan. The Buyer's Assurance Plan will extend the warranty time period and mirror
coverage of the original manufacturers' warranty up to one additional year after both the original
manufacturer's warranty and the purchased service contract have expired. If, however, you purchase an
American Express® Service Plan with a purchase from American Express Merchandise Services, the Buyer's
Assurance Plan will apply before the Service Plan is in effect. If the combined coverage of the original
manufacturer's warranty and the purchased service contract exceeds five years then the product purchased is
not eligible under the Buyer's Assurance Plan and no coverage applies.

Two-Sharp. Me bad. I think you right on the Amex. However I read somewhere Costco's is you call the credit card company first. Total time is still 1 years after manufacturer's warranty expires.
My Amex card says if the extended warranty purchased exceeds 12 months, then the Amex one does not apply. So since Costco is only extending 1 additional year, I would think then the Amex one would go into effect after the 2 years are up. It also says if either the original manufacturer warranty or the service contract covers more than 12 months, then Amex extended warranty benefits will not apply.

I think the plan may be different for different types of cards. Mine is the green Costco "TrueEarnings" card and has the policy I pasted in my prior post. So, mine applies as long as the combined (Mfg and Costco extension) do not exceed 5 years. Amex requires Mfg and Extended Warranty must apply first. stevesc thinks Costco requires Credit Card first - so who knows, maybe a pi55ing match. And as I mentioned, I'm not sure Amex would consider Costco a true extended warranty.

Here's another kicker, my Amex DOES NOT COVER items that are covered by an unconditional satisfaction guarantee (which was Costco's old policy). So, I have one sharp under each of the two plans since I purchased 6 weeks apart. Of course, no one would be able to determine which TV goes with which receipt, so If I wanted to be a little dishonest, I could have the best of all worlds.

Not sure if this has been mentioned. I just saw it today online:

"
THE RETURN POLICY FOR TELEVISIONS, PROJECTORS, COMPUTERS, CAMERAS, CAMCORDERS, IPODS / MP3S, AND CELLULAR PHONES IS 90 DAYS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE.

Manufacturer's warranty service is available on all electronics products. See manufacturer's warranty for specific coverage terms.

For COMPUTERS, TELEVISIONS and PROJECTORS, Costco extends the MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY to two years from date of purchase. Please call Costco Concierge Technical Support @ 1-866-861-0450 for warranty assistance.

PLEASE RETAIN YOUR RECEIPT FOR PROOF OF WARRANTY ENTITLEMENT. "

Emphasis mine.

call your credit card company and dispute the transaction.
honestly, I know how you feel because I've dealt with some of the worst customer service on earth (from time warner cable to my local circuit city). But what recourse do we have? Best buy has some of the highest prices around and I tell everyone i know never to go to best buy but other than that, they didn't really "scam" you. You were misled and it's wrong but i guess my suggestion is just never buy from best buy again. (and also tell everyone you know).
btw, it's ridiculous that they can't use both credit cards especially since they are both BB CC's.

You should buy a BB gift card for $500 with the $500 credit card at the store and then use the $1500 credit card combined with the gift card for the purchase online. At $1801 + tax it should be no more than $1950 or so.
Good luck...
well it seems they got everything straightened out until you got to the credit cards. technically your not supposed to have two credit cards under the same name unless

a) one of them is a joint account

b) one of them was closed and they you opened a second account

in the store they can take as many credit cards as they want. as long as it's not the same name on the same card.

if it's the same name different cards that should be no problem.

Their computer system will only accept one credit card. Even if I had a $500 gift card it would still not work.

What's crazy about this whole thing is after 4 hours of being on the phone with them and getting jerked around left and right, they were unwilling to do anything for me.

Actually, the Costco people can do anything they want. I was denied returning a one day old laptop with a receipt because the idiot person accused me that I tampered with it, even if the laptop still looks brand new with no physical damage. So, I had to take it back to another Costco store. I had to file a store complaint, after that.

did some one return > 3mo old tv recently, after policy change, purchased prior to change?

I have not returned anything that was purchased before the new policy change. However, I was informed directly by Costco customer service that any item purchased before the policy change would fall under the old guidelines. However, if that item were returned for an exchange/replacement after the new policy went into effect, it would be covered under the new 90 day return policy (no grandfather clause).
