Question about Calibration results

My TV isnt Calibrated but it is a Samsung DLP 720p HL-4266W model. Was wondering with Calibration, the dark scenes in DVD's were you have to turn brightness up on your TV to make out some of the DETAIL will that detail stand out on its own without having to turn brightness up while keeping the blacks extra black? I'm not saying I have my brighness high its only on 50 with contrast at 44. Will I have better seperation of blacks in the forground shadows? Something that can't be done by turning the brightness and contrast up and down.

I'd suggest you research display gamma. The gamma will define (and change) the way the data trends from black to white while not changing black or white. If you want your black to stay where its at, yet get more details just above black, you'll need to change your gamma curve or transfer function. I'll also note this is a balance act. You only have a fixed number of pegs and holes. If you want to stretch something in one place, you'll have to squish something somewhere else. No free lunch but you may find a different balance that you prefer over what you have now.

Dave's suggestion is spot on. Many folks hope that a calibration will somehow magically re-engineer the display and eliminate core technology issues.
I am not in the least suggesting, MASKOAA, that is what you are intimating. However, your question is thematic for calibrators, in that, when Blacks are raised to reveal the Detail we all wish to see, that evil Dithering or Quantization noise rears its ugly head. This is a signal processing issue that calibration can't overcome in the current crop of sets. When Bit processing rates become higher, and there are, as Dave refers to, more holes for more pegs, you'll see more Detail near the point where to where Black finally crushes. Hopefully, one day not too far in the future, we'll get Digital displays that can fully emulate that old work horse, the CRT.

First set up contrast and brightness per Poynton's Gamma FAQ and read his other gamma articles if interested. They are available at his web site. [http://www.poynton.com/].
