how do you determine screen size/placement?

Newbie building my first HT.

I plan to buy the Mitsu hd100u for a dedicate HT room (17'L x 11'W x 9'H). The room has one 3' widow that can be cover up. Seating will ~13' away. For a 91" screen the screen calculator gives a dimen of 79"L x 45"H x 91"D. I"m not sure if 91" is too big or not enough for 13' viewing distance. Even though viewing distance is within the range according to the calc.

Questions
1. How can you determine if the screen size is big enough to watch comfortably from the view distance?
2. Do you just buy the pj and project on the wall to see what screen size fits your needs and build the screen afterwards?
3. How to determine the placement of the screen as to how high above the floor? I plan to buy floor standing speakers and a/v rack and don't want the rack or speakers to overlapp the screen. I can either mount the pj on the ceiling or against the back wall - 17' from the screen.

thanks.

Welcome to the AVS Forums!

The best way to get a feel for what you want in a screen is to do as you say: Project on the wall for a while. There are rules of thumb for size and height, but what YOU like is most important.

For example, a lot of people say put the screen high, near the ceiling. But mine (and many others) is only 14" from the floor, 'cause that's where I want it!

If you haven't already seen it, here's a very good projection calculator:

yes, that's the calculator I use. Very nice calc..

Well, I guess project it on the wall and go from there.

The next step is more research on screen type. I'm leaning towards Wilsonart.

thanks for the suggestion..

I purchased a JVC RS10 for a dedicate HT room (25'L x 17'W x 8.5'H). The room has french doors that can be cover up and no wondows. I have read that some people recommend the screen be at least 30" from the floor. Is that a standard or do some people like it lower than that? I was looking at a 126" 16:9 screen but that would only leave 24" off the floor and 13.5" from the ceiling. Do you recommend I scale down 10 a 110" screen to get it higher off the floor? Please provide me your advice on how close is to close to the ceiling and how far I should be from the floor.

Also, while I have the experts online - I was looking at a Carada screen - trying to keep the price under $1000.

Thanks.

If you really want to get a notion of it before you buy anything, do the calculations to figure out how many rows back you need to sit at your local movie complex to get a similar field of view as you would have with your proposed setup at home. If you get half way through a movie at your local movie-plex and feel like vomiting, your screen at home is probably going to be too big.

Right now I have had my PJ hung for about a week and a half, projecting onto big strips of white paper (that are taped to the wall) while I come to a decision on the size and placement of the final screen. It has helped me to decide on a screen placement that was not the same as I was originally intending.

Both the distance from the floor and ceiling that you specified are quite acceptable, the former being so as long as there is only one row of seating

You'll have to lose that idea to be effectively guided by members of this DIY Forum. And well you should lose it, for we can best that budget by 3/4 the cost "MINIMALLY" of the Carada, and "Whoop-ass" on it at the same time.

Questions

I thought we were done.

How clever though...re-posting someone else's previously asked questions.

Speaking from previous experience with the RS-10, if the screen has no obvious texture, and your watching pristine HD content, you can sit at a 1:1 ratio, Seating distance to Diagonal size. It'll be almost total immersion...but that's cool.

If you need to do so to make your own evaluation, that will always allow you to avoid recriminatory feedback to someone whose suggests otherwise. I/we most of us can advise you well enough to avoid all that though.

Well you already asked as to if 24" off the Floor would suffice, so assumption would seem to say that none of your Speakers or your A/V Rack exceed that measurement in height. Even so, and if that is not the case, if you simply black out the ceiling above the screen, you can place the top of the Screen Trim within 6" of the ceiling.

Now we are done....until the next post, of course.
