My question is, if I just keep waiting until the current bulb just dies, is that bad for the projector? I've heard that bulbs can burst when they die, so I don't want to risk any damage.

Just wanted to bump this, since it may have gotten lost after the news that Jason Turk is no longer at AVS. Discussion also went onto the next page.

My original bulb was the best I had. It lasted a long time (over 3000 hours) and was brighter than my replacement after the replacement was at about 1000 hours. Makes me wonder if JVC somehow cherry picks the best lamps for the new projectors.

Anyway, to your question, my original bulb "exploded" but in the housing so no problem that I recall. The explosion was more like a soft "pop" and the projector went dark (obviously).

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Lylepdx! I think I'll stick it out with my current bulb. I'll have to check how many hours I have on it, but I don't think it's quite 3000. FWIW, this is actually a replacement bulb. I bought the PJ used from another AVS-er about 3 years ago. He told me that his bulb had just died, so he had a new one shipped to my house from AVS when I bought his projector. I've heard bulb quality can be a bit of a lottery.

A few comments,
Too bad for us that Jason has moved on - I really enjoyed working with him, he sold me my close-out RS1.

Bulb data points on my RS1:
I pulled my first bulb at 750 hours so that I would have a spare.
The replacement bulb (also from Jason), just started flickering when it hit 1500 hours. I bumped it to high mode, have like new brightness and a stable picture. I wonder how many add;l hours I will run on high mode before it dies off?

(Did I say - I love this PJ, feeling no urgency for an upgrade)

Still like my RS1 and just ordered another bulb. Hoping to get a good one.

Would love to see an RS55 in action.

Just wanted to say thanks for the idea to clean the mirror inside the RS1 next to the bulb. Wow! After about 6000 hours that mirror was visibly filthy and now that it is clean the image is soooooooooo much brighter. Nearly back to where it was when new, using an OEM replacement bulb. I had thought this bulb with 1000 hours was another weak one but was I wrong.

I had been away from this thread since late 2008 and hadn't read the last 20 pages. Appreciate the postings

I'm having some upgraditis! I have a JVC DLA-HD1 (RS1 clone) and I'm looking to upgrade to the DLA-X30. Looking at the AVS classifieds the RS1 seems to be going for right around a $1000. I have been blessed with a very nice PJ that doesn't suffer from the bright corners and has excellent convergence.

Do you guys think it would be a nice upgrade?

PM me an offer if you are interested.

I've gone from the RS1 to the RS10 and then, perhaps to stay for quite a while, the RS35. The X30 has a nice boost to contrast that you'd notice quickly if you have a dark viewing environment. While there is a pseudo-improvement afforded by a new bulb in a new projector with respect to brightness, the 2.5 times improvement in black level could be significant for you depending on your taste in movies (you'd see the difference more readily with literally darker movies) and, again, viewing environment.

Thanks for the information drapp! I do have a dedicated HT room that has 100% light control. To date that getting 100% light control of my room has been the best and cheapest upgrade I have ever done!

Honestly with all of the talk going on in the X30 owners thread I was hoping to gain a little bit of sharpness to my picture. Apparently that has been improved with this latest go around of JVC projectors.

I have just started researching a replacement bulb for my HD750 and have come across "diamond" bulbs. Anybody know what they are?
There is a dedicated thread talking about these in this forum.
Well I just ordered one. The thread I saw is only six posts long. Is that the one you refer to or is there another?

Where did you find them?

Projector Lamp Genie.

It will arrive today. I will be posting my experience in that other thread.

Have you ever opened it up to see if you have the haze from off-gassing?

Well guys I decided to put my RS1 up for sale in the avs classifieds. This PJ has been the best and trouble free unit I have ever owned. Link below. Thanks for viewing!

My RS1 is the first projector that has never suffered from off gassing. Using genuine JVC bulbs. First time I tried cleaning the glass in front of the bulb was when I installed my 3rd bulb. Projector had 2400 hours on it. The lens was perfectly clean. I change bulbs around 1100 to 1300 hours. It is still watchable but like the brighter image I get in the first 1000 hours of use.

No urge to upgrade here...color corrected with a DVDO Duo and it looks as good as any of the newer projectors I have seen at my local shop. Slow panning blur is the only issue but it still looks smoother than what I see at local movie theaters. Doesn't bother me.

Is anybody looking for the projector half of the RPA184 chief mount for the RS1? PM me.

I resisted but finally fell and now have a RS55 paired with a Duo. I believe it produces a much better picture. We use 3D, but still primarily use for 2D. Was worth it for our setup. SJ

Thanks but still no urge to upgrade here. I happen to have a very sharp RS1. Nearly perfect convergence over 70% of the screen and worse case a half pixel in red only on one side. Even with a PC its sharp right to all corners. Plus the long throw setup yields a very good contrast ratio. I've measured ratios in the room of 13k:1 with no special setup...that was in room ratio and that was the limit of my meter. And it was still greater than what I measured. I also measured an ansi checkerboard pattern of 450:1 which surprised me. I know I would have better panning but like I said its still better than at the local movie theater.

If I had a shorter throw and a higher black level then yeah I probably would want better but blacks don't bother me that way. Its plenty dark for my taste and setup. Plus I've seen some good setups and never felt that there is an improvement over what I have. So for now I'll continue to get my money worth out of this projector. Just keep enjoying movies!

If my projector dies then yes I will go for something like you have for sure for 2D. I have a DLP projector I use for 3D and love it. The JVC would never be bright enough for 3D in my 23 ft throw setup. I would also need a new screen to use 3D and the JVC you have so it would cost me a lot to change everything. Cheers, Ron

Just curious if you have bright corners on yours? Seems like it was hit and miss with their first 1080P projector in this consumer priced series. My RS1 had them pretty bad. RS2 not a hint. RS25 not a hint. RS50 just a hint but not enough to even concern me. I have a High Power screen and prefer to set the projector up for higher foot lamberts as I do a lot of sports watching in addition to the bluray movies....so if they are there I will see them.

A very slight hint of them when my bulb is still bright but the picture needs to be all black for a bit to see it. Never notice it with even the darkest movies.

If you like 30ft-L plus then I can see where the newer projectors would give you a better dark scene but I find 17ft-L and below the right range. My DLP does 36ft-L on my screen and I don't like it. Good for 3D though where I get about 6ft-L with a newer bulb. Using a higher gain draper m2500 that is about 1.7 gain.

My dlp will throw 96ft-L in bright mode on a 120 inch screen. LOL

Also I purchased my RS1 when the RS2 was already released. It was among the last of the original RS1...then the RS1x came out a month or so later.

I just switched on my RS1, the fan span up, the bulb briefly lights up, but then the unit shuts down. The warning led lights up and the standby/on led flashes for about 30 seconds. Then the fan stops and both warning and standby/on leds remain on. The lamp led does not illuminate at any time. Unit was working fine yesterday.

I'm not sure what to do - buy a new lamp in the hope it is that even if the lamp led isn't lighting and risk wasting £300, or send it off for repair?

I bought this PJ in 2007 for what I remember was quite a bit of cash - I assume pj tech has moved on a lot in 5 years and I wonder if a repair is even cost effective?

I have searched for this specific set of led combination but not found anything. It can't be temperature related and I have cleaned the filter.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
