I think I found the solution to the problem I posted a while back about vertical scan lines popping up from time to time like the screen was jumping a bit to the side. I tried everything, no help, then I remembered that a while back had I adjusted the screen up vertically to hide a small overscan across the top on one channel. I used auto adjust to set it back to the correct adjustment and the problem is gone. Hasn't happened since.

good to know! after I started talking about the psu issue to my wife, she now says she saw some of those blue lines... I might have to try this.

Just bought a refurb 747i from Micro Center today. $600 plus tax. Seems like a lot of TV for very little money. Here's hoping it lasts for a good long while, no extended warranties are available. I know that Olevia is Chapter 11, so it is a crap shoot. (I also still buy HD DVD's so I am used to crap shoots.)

I think you have the record for lowest price yet. I gotta say that is alot of TV for the money.

Not too far out of line for a refurb. Don't have room for a 47 though.

What type of banding is this (line on right side)? Can this be fixed or should I take this out back and shoot it?

Looks like a row of dead pixels more than banding. How does that line look up-close (with your face practically in front of it)? Does it look like a bunch of little squares bunched together or a straight line of black running from top to bottom? If it's the former it's dead pixels and if it's the latter then it's banding, and there is little you can do about either without technicians or a replacement unit available.

Is the line noticeable and distracting during regular TV/PS3 use? If it is then get out your shotgun. If you can live with it then it's up to you whether you can tolerate that or not. If it were me I'd live with it for now but I'd start seriously looking around for cheap Vizio plasmas with HQV (or their 55' LED model).

Just got back from Micro Center. They still have 2 - 747i models available in the Houston store. Micro Center is providing a one year parts and labor warranty on all the Olevia sets they sell, both new and refurbs. Nobody at Micro Center (that I found) knows any of the details. As a minimum, if you deliver the set to Micro Center, they will repair it for the first year. Today, everybody at Micro Center seems to be in agreement that the warranty is one year, last Friday, most thought it was only 90 days. I got a print out while there that lists the 747i, SKU # Specifications, price, and recites the 1 year warranty ALL ON THE SAME PAGE. (I plan to keep that handy, just in case!)

(Should anyone want to locate a 747i in your local Micro Center, you will have to go in, or call and ask for availability of SKU #093245. It is still not listed on the web site.)

I called my credit card provider (Chase Visa) and asked about doubling the manufacturers warranty. Basically, they DO NOT DOUBLE any store warranty, such as the Micro Center warranty mentioned above.

However, if you bought a NEW Set with the Chase card, and qualify for the additional one year warranty, then they will sell you a 5 year warranty which you can buy at any time prior to the expiration of the additional one year warranty. That was a surprise to me. And, I think bears repeating.

If you bought a new Olevia 747i with your Chase Visa card, and qualify for the additional year of warranty coverage through the credit card perq, then they will sell you an additional 3 years of coverage, making 5 years of coverage in total.

This is available on Chase, and other issuers. It is not universal, and apparently not all cards issued by a given bank will carry this perq. YMMV...If you have any questions, call the toll free number on the back of your credit card, and ask them if the sell extended warranties.

Here is the URL for the extended warranty sellers...

http://usa.visa.com/personal/visa-si...ty-manager.jsp

There are 2 grids about 2/3 of the way down on the page that list costs of the etxtended warranties. This site has a great deal of detail about this topic. They also have a toll free number (1-800-882-8057) for general questions about this service. Since Olevia is no longer providing any warranty service at all, it makes an extended warranty much more appealing.

Call Micro Center and ask them if they can/will repair it. One of the Micro Center associates, said that Micro Center had purchased a "5 year supply of spare parts from Olevia". I don't know if that is true, but I do know they are offering a 1 year parts and labor warranty on all the Olevia new and refurbished sets they sell. If you have a local Micro Center, you may be in luck.

The Olevia website has disappeared and message "Invalid Host Name" appears. Further research indicates that "Syntax Brillian Corp'', the manufacturer of Olevia has closed the facility and sold all Olevia assets to Emerson Radio Corp of New Jersey. This was confirmed in link below to Arizona Central newspaper website. Interesting since Emerson sold all its LCD TV business and licensing rights to Funai Corp of China, same company that now markets Phillips LCD TV's in US since Fall of 2007.

Sad but not entirely unpredictable. I feel bad for the average investor that was duped.

We should see even more fire sale prices on the 7 series now that retailers will try to dump them before consumers become aware of the lack of support/warranty.

We were fortunate to choose to buy this set with its exceptional components, features and performance. It was one companies shot at making a high end set. We got a great deal. I could have easily missed it. When these sets go, thats it. This thread documented a little bit of serendipity. Its been fun, still is.

I stumbled on a great article about TV broadcast encoding schemes over at EngadgetHD titled HD 101: What is ATSC, PSIP, QAM, and 8-VSB?. Really explains alot about the reasons why broadcast TV suks. Heres a qoute about ATSC, "Interestingly, 1080p30 is actually a part of the spec, but most don't expect it to ever be utilized because 19.39Mbps isn't really enough to send artifact free MPEG-2 HD at 1080p -- or 1080i for that matter when it comes to sports." Damn straight. http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/08...qam-and-8-vsb/

Micro Center's sale on Olevia Refurbs ended on Sunday. The 747i is up to $699.99. The Houston store, still has 2 - 747i models in stock.

I searched, but did not find this kit. I guess that it just never got produced.

It looks to me like the brackets that attach the speakers to the bottom of the set would work to attach them in the vertical position as well. If so, all you would need would be some speaker fabric to cover the speakers. Alternatively, you could cut and trim the supplied speaker grill to cover the moved speakers.

Can anyone confirm that my notion will work?

Worst night of the summer. I had bought and downloaded the new Gears of War 2 maps this morning before work and excited to play. XBox360 over HDMI looks so good, but I'm preaching to the choir. While eating dinner, watched a video from my Mac Mini connected by VGA. Little more than half way through the show, click, 747i turns off. Thought I had accidentally rolled onto the remote, but nope did it on it's own.

A year old on June 18th. Second place it's lived, but always had a good quality surge protector (monster cable powerbar and now a PureAV series powerbar by Belkin). Nothing out of the ordinary -- no storm, lightning, issues with any of the other appliances or gadgets. I tried plugging into another outlet, another powerbar, another cord.

When I hit Power on the set, or the original remote, it clicks twice, as if it's clicking on/off quickly. I got so accustomed to it that I really don't remember exactly, but it would click once when starting up. Now there's nothing. Click, click and a really quick blue flash from the LED on the front of the set. No backlight, no Olevia logo. Seems as if it's the power supply and it's just not powering on. Anyone know if there's a fuse or something that can be reset?

I tried the firmware update button combo with a USB key and the latest firmware from the site, but it doesn't respond to that at all. The service menu button combo didn't do anything either. Tried my harmony remote and the original remote and buttons on the set. Nothing.

If anyone's come across this and has any ideas or anything I can try, please respond. The set was bought with a Visa that doubles the warranty, but since the company is bankrupt and I haven't claimed anything from Visa before, I don't feel very optimistic about it. It's not like I can haul it back to Tiger Direct's warehouse on the subway, even though I have the box.

I have had this tv for almost a year. Have a Samsung blu-ray system hooked up, a Wii, and a vip 722 sat receiver. I stretch all tv most of the time to fill up the screen. The only thing I notice is light bleed in the corners, most from the bottom right. From what I have seen of other sets in friends homes and in stores, I really think this is just as good and in some cases a nicer tv. Should I try and get rid of this before I get the "inevitable line/banding" problem?

Unless you stumble upon a so-good-you-must-buy-it-ASAP on a much better HDTV (like a quality 120Hz 52" set for under a grand) I'd say ride the snake for as long as it lasts you.

warrenpeace, all I can recommend is that you ask around (in either technical forums or with people 'in the know') to see if somebody that fixes HDTV's or knows how they work can take a look at the electrical power-up components of your 747i for little or no money as a favor. Sometimes these sets just get a fried fuse or two in their wiring, preventing energy from reaching the power-up screen. These are relatively easy things to fix if you know what you're doing (which I'm not) and don't involve the more difficult task or replacing motherboards or new circuitry. Absent that all I can say is... life sucks, and then you buy a new HDTV. At least now flat screen HDTV's are cheaper, bigger and (relatively) better than ever. A local store in NYC (J&R Music World) is selling a Toshiba 46" 1080p LCD with three HDMI inputs for under a grand. For just a little bit more you can get an even better deal if you look around. Sorry your 747i turned out to be a dud, but (if you know people) it might be a dud worth saving if it's only an electrical connection problem.

Except for some Mitsubishi LCD models I still can't think of another HDTV on the market that would deliver the goods I wanted back in '06-'07 (PIP with all inputs, strong built-in sound, good SD performance, etc.) like my 747i still delivers. That and the ability to clean all surfaces of it with Windex (try that on your fragile and exposed LCD screen from a brand model) compensate for its heavy weight and inability to tilt sideways. Even the 'banding' that's overtaken the set isn't noticeable enough during most TV shows/movies for me to curse it or be more than briefly annoyed by it (for a minute or two before going back to being wrapped by the content). Can't say the newer, bigger, cheaper HDTV's coming out aren't tempting (that Vizio 55' LED set for approx. $1,500 sounds too good to be true! ) but up until the need to upgrade becomes too strong to resist my 747i continues to be the best $3K I've spent over the past decade.

It might, but you would have to saw the plastic speaker box and the mesh cover in half, and it would look like this

if not it would look like this?

But seriously, it seems like it moving the speakers to the sides should improve stereo imaging and raise the dialog location to a better height. I have my speaker removed. I'll measure the mounting screw locations and take a look to see if it will work and let you know.

I called Visa and they are mailing a claims form (what year is it? why isn't it online?) and they want warranty, statement/invoice/receipt and a repair estimate. I called Olevia (or the idiots who are doing the servicing now) and had one of the most painful phone support experiences of my life. Guy was monotone, had the worst connection and couldn't hear me or was trying to talk over me and not listening. In the end he tells me I'd have to ship the set from Toronto to California to have it looked at before they could provide a repair estimate.

Knowing that shipping it to California is ridiculous, I checked online for a repair place and found a post on gigpark, where someone posted a testimonial for http://www.electronicsfirstaid.com and he picked it up and took it away to look at. He was a really nice guy and said it'd be no less than $100 and no more than $500, but would call when he figured out the issue and said it sounds like it's just the power supply and that it's what he deals with 99% of the time with LCD's.

Called yesterday to say he needs more time and will call Wednesday, but other than the power supply he thinks there's also an issue with the Y Board. I'm not familiar and googling it on my iPhone after the call didn't really give me any clarity. I wish the fix was as easy as changing a couple capacitors like this guy did: http://www.flickr.com/photos/geegee1...7607269121264/

Right now I'm waiting and hoping he finds fix once he's familiarized himself with the set more (which is why he wanted more time).

At least they didn't shut down your request out of hand, so maybe there's hope.

As for repair tips try posting to this site http://en.allexperts.com/q/TV-VCR-St...ly-Proscan.htm maybe they can point you in the right direction.

We really need to start a place for people to their post parts (like power supplies) if their sets go belly up.

Hey everybody. I came across this site for television repair service. Only thing is it's in NY but they are an accredited BBB repair shop.

Well, just a suggestion. Request all defective, replaced parts. Tell him that Visa wants them, and is sending a shipping container for them. It MIGHT keep him honest, and NOT charge for replacing items that were NOT replaced, and NOT charge for replacing items that were NOT DEFECTIVE. Any honest business would be happy to comply.

FYI - Also, Chase Visa WILL SELL AN EXTENDED WARRANTY UP TO THE END OF THE MANUFACTURERS AND THE EXTRA YEAR PROVIDED BY CHASE. In other words, if you have this bennie, in your case, you can get an extended warranty for up to 2 years from the date you purchased your covered item. Per the CS rep (who spoke perfect English) this gives you a "Good chance to see if you really need an extended warranty".

You may, or may not, have this benefit from your CC.

Just a note to inform all Olevia owners that the Olevia website is up and running again with manual, firmware updates, etc. Same website as before. I guess Emerson re-energized the old website. Even has a warranty page?
