I need help with my DVD player, Samsung HD950

I only have this problem while watching the DVD player, regular HDTV reception and color is great.

TV Model: Samsung HL-R6167W From the specs, Resolution:1280x720. Broadcast Format Supported: 480i - 480p - 720p - 1080i

DVD Model: Samsung DVD HD-950

I have them hooked up using the HDMI cable while the sound is connected using an optical cable to the receiver.

I had this set for about a year, in the last 2 months I started noticing this water coloring effects, it almost looks like cartoons, specially during dark scenes. (I am not sure if this was the case when I first bought it)

I looked at the settings of the DVD player and noticed the resolution was set at 1080i, I changed this down to 720p which is what I think my TV can handle. Right? But no changes in the quality of the picture. Is there anything I can do to improve the picture? Do I have the right settings? Could it be the cable?

A friend of mine told me that is the DVD. Is he right? I may need to buy a better DVD player that won't give me these problems. Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem with my HD950.
Until a couple of weeks ago I had it connected to a Samsung 940mw 19'' LCD/TV with both Component and DVI (through the HDMI-DVI cable) with no problems at all with any resolution (576p, 720p, 1080i).
Now I connected it to a Samsung 2032 20'' LCD/TV and I'm also experiencing bad colors in dark scenes.
I thought it could be the monitor, but all other connections are perfect (DVI, VGA, Composite, SCART, TV, S-Video).
So I tried to tweak settings through the Service Menu and I was able to get an almost perfect quality with Component connection, but with HDMI no way.
The last thing I could try is to connect the player with the HDMI-DVI cable, even if the monitor only supports the strange 768p resolution on the DVI port.

Anyways, I would like to know if our problem is the same and then due to the HD950.
If you have a DVD with the THX Optimizer (such as Star Wars ones) you could try the 2nd (or 3rd I'm not sure) video test, the one with the THX text.
This THX text should be slightly visible, but in HDMI I wasn't able to see the text in any way, even if I change settings in the service menu.
So if you could run this test and get the same result we know that the problem is due to the HD950 HDMI connection.

I'm fixing my problem.
It is due to the monitor, not the player.
I'm changing the monitor settings through the service menu and I'm getting an almost perfect quality.
I think I'll be done in the next few days.
