The reports seem to be that the two main files (index and movieobject) are different for AVCHD compared to BDMV. Most of the current programs do menus only for BDMV, while Ulead and Nero will do menus for AVCHD with H264 video. I wasn't real sure what I was looking for, but in a hex editor nothing stuck out as clearly different in the .bdmv files and an easy way to make BDMV from Ulead play as AVCHD, or allow the Ulead AVCHD to use anything other than H264. BD structure edit
mentioned in this thread was an interesting item, but it didn't seem to necessarily lead anywhere in its current form. Because I'd like to be able to create a 24p Blu-ray with menus that the PS3 can play from DVDs, which appears to only be AVCHD at this time, I'd certainly like to see something like this done.
My first guess was to use either the Ulead or Nero AVCHD output and replace m2ts files, but in Ulead that messes up chapter skipping. Of course there also seems to be stream information files (CLIPINF), and I didn't think to try replacing those in my original trial. Odds are that using the Ulead AVCHD output and then putting in the BDMV m2ts and CLIPINF files still might not work, but without getting into the actual file information I really had no other ideas. I was unable to find anything that really gives the technical details about the files that Blu-ray uses for playback.
Personally I'd be interested just to find how chapters are stored, but I suppose if I really wanted to spend the time a hex editor comparision on tsremux files with different chapter times would give some clue. If it happens chapters are stored in CLIPINF, using the Ulead AVCHD with menus and using file replacement might work for my application. I haven't tried replacing both m2ts and CLIPINF, or even seeing if tsremux does create correct CLIPINF files by what BD edit is showing. With the complete lack of any good information, I just decided I might be completely wasting time trying to get AVCHD with menus that are anything other than H264 that Nero or Ulead will accept or transcode.
