Yes there is some tropo in the air even now at 2pm. Getting locks on WTMJ on and off also MPTV 36. Blips also on some of the other Milwaukee channels. WITI my old barn burner is not there locked (Thank you stupid local LPTV crap) RF 33 is about 1/4 scale blips with a black screen so the local is knocked out with no lock on anything. Maybe if tropo rocks bigtime later tonight I can see if WITI can stomp this local out and lock. That I would like to see.

WSBT from South Bend is showing me blips so thats nice to see again. Tropo has been dead for quite some time.

Just check tropo at almost 10pm not too strong by me, limited in and out of a few Milwaukee's and blips on 22 South Bend. Guess I won't see WITI kick RF 33 in Chicago's butt today... oh well. Back to programming new DVB finds on Ku band.

Being some distance from Chicago you will notice it quite a bit more than I do locally. Usually once you get west of route 59 Chicago radio will fall apart in tropo. Since I spend 99% of my time watching my satellite dishes or listening to them I don't have a clue when tropo is happening. I check every now and again with my DTT-900 and my DX stack. But things have been so dead with winter I haven't tried much like in the summer. I miss WITI and how it used to stomp in here all last summer long. Im surprised Im only getting blips on WSBT thats the other barn burner in the summer. My heart ain't in it like in the 80's with analog.

Nice hits. I used to get into Toledo Ohio back in the 80's with analog using my Winegard CS 9095 and CS 4052 antennas on my rotor back then. I never forget one warm summer night I was getting all of South Bend, Fort Wayne, Toledo, Detroit, and Windsor Ontario. That was on my old 1983 Zenith 19" color set. That thing had a hell of a tuner in it for Analog DX. Those were the days

Consider the following, all done around 11:30 PM from my CM 4228 antenna in my attic, fairly low in a river valley out here in the frozen corn...all of these are first-timers for me, except the last two...

WDCQ-DT rf 15, Bad Axe, MI (far eastern MI, near the Canada border, PBS affiliate):

http://weather.admin.niu.edu/gilbert...o/DSC00016.JPG

WKBD-DT rf 14 (50.1), Detroit, MI (CW affiliate):

http://weather.admin.niu.edu/gilbert...o/DSC00017.JPG

WNEM-DT rf 22 (5.1), Bay City, MI:

http://weather.admin.niu.edu/gilbert...o/DSC00018.JPG

WCMU-DT, rf 26, Mt. Pleasant, MI (PBS affiliate, no picture)

WEWS-DT rf 15, (5.1) Cleveland, OH (ABC affiliate, no picture)

WRTV-DT rf 25 (6.1), Indianapolis, IN (ABC affiliate, no picture)

A friend who lives in Elburn has a VU-190XR from Radio Shack on a Channelmaster 7777
preamp in his second-story attic. He easily locked WISE-DT 33.1, Fort Wayne, IN.

WOW!

WOW!

Must be because your away from the city that your getting so many channels. Over here in town the UHF band is so congested I don't stand a chance.

Im sure if tropo was coming in here like in the summer WITI would have stomped WCHU. They did kill it with the weak tropo I got but didn't override for a lock.

BTW any chances of WCHU moving anytime soon? I haven't kept up with the news.

I also picked up a few last night on my DTT and common-apartment antenna:
WSBT, WNDU and WNIT, which I've received before.
New ones were WISE (RF18, 33.1, Fort Wayne?) and WEWS (isn't it RF15, not 14?. Wikipedia says it's Cleveland, not Toledo).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WEWS

On the other hand, WYIN and WJYS were gone.

Virtually every RF channel was showing something on the DTT's bar, too bad most were not strong enough to lock into something.

Also, at one time, when I tried RF17, it changed the virtual from 56 to 3, although I never got a picture. Is there an RF17 with a virtual of 3 someplace?

Nice catches, andyross. Yes, WISE (NBC) is Fort Wayne and WEWS, Cleveland is on RF channel 15. Since you received WEWS, your virtual channel 3/RF channel 17 station was most likely WKYC (NBC), Cleveland.

I just did some stepping through the channels in manual mode, Im showing some blips here and there and locked WNDU on the South Bend DX ant. The Milwaukee DX ant is locking WTMJ, MPTV 36, CBS 58. Don't know why Im only getting blips on WSBT? Maybe some other DX is knocking it out.

WCHU is gone WITI has got it knocked out but no lock on WITI. I wonder how many people that actually watch WCHU is having problems today? (summer tropo would really do a number) This is good, I hope CHU get's the message to vacate RF 33!

And I cannot believe that this Tropo is so strong during the day...WKOW is like a local here at 2pm! Didn't lock anything from Ohio, too bad, I moved to Wheeling a while back and don't get any stations from South Bend anymore. But soild locks last night on KLJB/KWKB and WMBD, using a 4221 indoors on the 3rd floor.

A friend of mine a few miles away has a 4221 and a 7777 preamp also and a DTT901 - last night he was locking WYZZ 43 and here is the best part - the antenna is facing a window, but in the basement! THAT is a new one, but it really did happen. I'd say this Tropo is better that what we had all summer last year.
Yea I have been getting WITI reliably for the past two days now with no breakups from kankakee county! This station has been coming in better than many of my local stations :YIKES ! Im also gettign MPTV, WMLW, and other stations with out any effort.

Still no luck getting any of the low power stations from downtown though.

Getting WOTV out of Grand Rapids. I wonder if I should move the antenna to see if I can get anything out of canada.

Steve

Thanks, Steve, for the correction...I had it as Cleveland originally, but then I changed it to Columbus for whatever reason. So much tropo my head was spinning! And Andy, nice PSIP catch from Cleveland!

And yes, this is the best tropo I have seen so early in the year in 20+ years of DX'ing, and also better than anything except for one time last year. This will keep going until Tuesday, so keep trying, folks!

It must be because I never pick up anything when this happens (I have a ClearStream 4 mounted indoors on a tripod) but I was able to pick up WRTV in Indianapolis this afternoon between 12:00pm and 2:00pm. See attached pictures: (1) (2)

WRET-HD (6.1) just had an infomercial going so I capped WRET-DT (6.2) instead as they had the news/weather on. I wish there was some meteorological anomaly that would allow me to pick up WYCC. Sigh.
I have came to the conclusion that 90 percent of the stations pass on what the network sends and have outstanding pq, unless you live in Chicago that is.
WJYS is lost here; I don't know if the signal isn't reaching us or some other RF36 is knocking it out during these tropo times. WYIN is unaffected.

On another note, 13-4 dropped the Slingbox screensaver and was blank and silent; today it's blank with a buzz.

I'll trade with you... you can have these LPTV foreign junk. I'll take WITI and them

Anybody have trouble with OTA/decoder boxes reception of NBC 5.1?

I'm on the NW side of Chicago, and lost NBC last night. weather related? I'm getting tired of these decoder boxes.

Most likely not your CECB. There has been a major tropo event today. This is causing TV signals to travel farther than normal. This also causes interference with your locals.
Thanks much - I usually can tell when something's wrong. I'm still getting tired of the CECB's - with LCD TV's getting cheaper....
I'm enjoying the other end of the tropo ducting that is in place tonight. I locked a watchable signal on WYIN DT 17. I am in Holly, MI about 45 miles NW of downtown Detroit! I live in a semi rural area, and at an elevation about 200 ft above average. Also locked on a few other Indiana stations. Hoping I 'might' capture something from Chicagoland proper. Using a simple little Radio Shack VU 90 with Winegard preamp and rotor outdoors.

Oh well, so much for watching the Golden Globe awards tonight. No signal on either channel.

I'll agree with that. I'm getting tired of all this low power crap-o-vision.
