Yep, I'm certain. The native resolution of the set is 1024x768. The native resolution of the 50" version of my set is 1280x768. I have another TV (different brand, size, but same native resolution) that also accepts 1280x768, but not 1280x720 via VGA, so for me this hasn't been uncommon or weird. I thought this was common for sets that are really 768p, like mine are.

I don't recall ever hearing of a set with a 1280x768 native res. 1366x768 is much more common I think. That's what both mine are. Olevia 427V and Envison LW37 something I think.

It would be fantastic to be able to run mythfrontend without having to choose between dropping frames every 11 seconds or dealing with the drawbacks of the Use Video As Timebase feature.

Excellent summation of the problem and I think you hit it right. It could be an nVidia driver issue with 1080i, we've seen plenty (like the fact that we shouldn't have to deint at all for an interlaced TV).

But I don't think you'll find an answer here - you might want to post this on the MythTV users and/or developers list. Check it out here:

I just switched the DVI cable on my Envision TV over to VGA and guess what, the 1280x720 res that worked with the dvi->hdmi cable doesn't work through the vga port.:-)
After playing with it for about 30 minutes it does take a 1360x768 res and display properly. And there isn't a modeline for it either. Just replaced the "1280x720" with "1360x768" in xorg.conf and away she went. You'd think the manufactures would make the modes the same on all inputs, but I guess some of them don't. The Olevia will run 1280x720 on both vga and dvi.
