Using a laptop as a remote control

Is there any remote control software that doesn't assume you need to see the host computer on the remote computer's screen? It would be a waste of computer and network resources to send video to the remote computer when it isn't necessary.

Sure, probably lots. AIVMS has a client for that purpose, allows you to do just about anything from a remote laptop without ever seeing the actual screen on the server. Here is a screen from the AIVMS remote client in action (controlling the on-demand network media streaming server).

Here is the client screen for controlling home automation remotely:

The buttons you see can be customized to send IR signals or just about anything else. It includes a TitanTV one click interface that can change channels on your display remotely or schedule a recording for a remote component like a DVR cable or sat box, VCR, etc.

What I actually want is the ability to use something like Remote Desktop but without it sending video to the client. I want to control Windows on the HTPC as if the laptop's keyboard and mouse was connected to the HTPC. But since I can see the HTPC on the tv there is no need to send video back to the laptop.

you could use a piece of software called synergy, it shares the PC's mouse and keyboard functions via software instead of a KVM.

Why bother with laptop and software then? Get wireless keyboard and mouse?
