Can you play PS3 games with a PS2 controller?

Ok, I know this is a pretty dumb question, but I recently rented Virtua Fighter 5, and the game is super fun, and I would like to play against a buddy of mine, but I'm not about to drop $50 on another Sixaxis, especially considering there will probably be a new version of the Sixaxis with rumble in a few months.

I've heard you can use a PS2 controller with the PS3 if you have one of those USB adapter things, but I'm not sure what you can actually do with a PS2 controller. Can you only use it on PS2 games? Or can you actually use it on PS3 games? Like for example, can I use it as a Player 2 controller for like sports games and fighting games?

Is there anyway to use it as Player 1? I have this X-Arcade joystick thing, along with a PS2 adapter for the X-Arcade joystick, and I would love to use that joysick with VF5, but I'm not sure if it will work at all.

I don't believe that you can due to there not being a PS button on the controllers.

I have heard that you cannot play PS2 games on PS3 with a PS2 controller, but supposedly you can play PS3 games on the PS3 with a Dual Shock if you have the USB adapter thing. But I'm not sure how well it all works.

Try a PS2 to PS3 adapter, they sell them on eBay for $10-$15 shipped.

I know you can play Tiger Woods 07 for the PS3 with a PS2 controller and a USB adapter however the PS2 controller will not work for the PS2 version of TW on the PS3.

Anybody know for sure that you can use Dual shock controllers? Looking for actuall users, and how do you get around the PS button issue?

OK, you CAN use a PS2 controller to play PS3 games. The easiest way to do it is use the aforementioned adaptor from radio shack and assign your PS3 controller to be controller number 2 : for some reason, there are less conflicts that way. Then plug in your adaptor to the 1st usb slot and you're good to go. You can use the ps3 controller to acess the PS button menu while you're using the PS2 controller. Keep in mind, that this will only work for PS3 games. You're **** outta luck on PS2 games (go figure...thanks Sony). I can verify that this method works for Tekken DR5 and Resistance. I turned off the sensing feature in Resistance (which is never used anyways - I mean, does anyone let those things grab you beyond their first meeting with them?) just to be safe. Believe me, the difference in Resistance is night and day. You feel like you have actual control over your character rather than wondering when the flimsy PS3 controller will snap in your hands or just fly out from too much pressure on the triggers.

There are at least two other uses for shaking the sixaxis, shaking off Bullseye tags and putting out the fire when you are on fire.

I do like the weighter feel of the Dual Shock but I like the analog sticks of the Sixaxis much better.

Do accessorys/other controllers also work with an adapter? Guitars, light-guns etc.?

I bought on of the apdapters on Ebay and PS2 controllers work just fine. Like mentioned above if you are only using the PS2 controller in a game there is no way to jump out since there is no PS button but that easy to fix but grabbing your PS3 controller and pressing the button on it. The controller works flawlessly on Fight Night. Much better than spending 50 on a new controller

Thanks, Coffy, I had no idea there were other uses for that feature. I learn something every day. For ages I assumed it was only to shake off those things a simple melee attack will kill. Elwar, If you're thinking it will work for Guitar Hero, it will not. I use the triggers for melee in Resistance, and the PS3 controller made it awful. Now I have instant response, and if I need to input a button quickly in sucession it works. The triggers on PS3 needed to be eased out almost the whole way to reregister an input. Come on, Sony, instead of hitting the PS button to play a PS1 or 2 game- why not ANY button? Start? Select?! Surely some kid in 6th grade could do that with a computer and acess to your programming. Sheesh. Any hackers out there? Hello?
