How high should I mount my surround speakers? (eg. dedicated HT room)

I'm almost finished with my dedicated home theater room but I'm unsure where to mount my surround speakers.

I don't have any rear speakers so I'm only using a 5.1 setup.

I believe the general guideline for surround speakers is to the side and slightly behind the listeners about 2 feet above ear level. Is that correct?

The width of my room is almost 12' and my seats will take up about 6 feet of that (approximately). That means from each seat to the wall it will be about 3 feet (or slightly more/less).

How high should I mount the surround speakers? Should I mount them two feet above ear level even though I am very close to them?

Should I mount the speakers slightly behind the listeners (but still on the wide walls of course)?

Thanks!

There is a good diagram of 5.1 placement here

As for height, I have the same question

About ear level.

the front tweeters should be ear level too right? so it's safe to mount ALL at same height?

From ********** "Regardless of exactly where they are placed on either wall, make sure to locate them above ear level or so that they do not directly radiate toward the listener. With surround speakers, some reflection is intended before reaching the listener's ears".

I would agree.

Thanks for the replies.

The general concensus seems to be "above ear level", but how much above ear level? The ecoustics link above says "about 2 feet above ear level", but I would think it depends on how far you are from the speaker, right?

The speakers are being wall-mounted so they really can't be moved (without patching up the holes, repainting, etc) after they are installed.

Anybody have any other suggestions for me?

Thanks!
