Anyone dismantle a Vutec Silverstar take it apart?

Brilliant person I am, I bought a screen that I can't fit down my stairs. I was looking at taking it apart and was wondering if anyone had done so. Any input would be helpful!
Best,
Chris
PS Please NO comments about my stupidity! I have heard them all from my wife tonight!

Isn't that the perfect excuse to convince your wife to turn the entire 1st floor of your house into a new theater and move the living room downstairs? "but honey, the screen won't fit down the stairs!"

Ok on a more serious note; The screen itself has the delicate silver paper laminated onto a rigid board, so I can't see how you can take a silverstar apart, unless you mean the large crate it ships in ?

Are there any windows in the basement you can get the screen in sideways ?
Most basement slider windows when you take both left & right window panels out will give you a little more than 5ft in width, angle the screen a little and your at 6ft wide.

How big is the screen, and what exactly is the issue. You will not gain much at all by taking it apart. have you looked at the specs and manual to see how much room you will gain by removing the border? That should give you your answer as far as gaining the amount of room needed. I wouldnt know anything about doing it, or if its even an option

The screen is 133" diag. I am ever so close to fitting it down the stairs, but the height and angle are not working for me!!! DAMN 3.5" really nice frame border! I looked at the back of the screen and it LOOKS like it is kinda easy to take apart, but of course I am scared that I will screw up the screen material. It kinda looks like a piece of wall board put into a screen with brackets all the way around. I will revisit it tonight when I get home from work.
No windows or any other access point to the basement either. And no, wife won't go for 133" screen in living room, even thought it would fit GREAT over the fireplace. I was hard pressed to get here to accept the 84" Carada in our bedroom, but of course now that it is there she can't live without it! :-)

AHHHHHH, DARN YOU TRYG!!! When I got instant notification that you had responded to my threadI was so excited as I know of your love of this screen. Instead, I received mockery! :-)
And trust me, if I could take the house apart where I could get it to fit, I WOULD!!
Well, at least this keeps getting bumped!
sigh....

You could sell it to me. I have a first floor viewing area that needs a new screen.

Other then that I'd cut a hole and patch it before letting that screen go.

AHHHHHHH, If I could cut a hole and patch it I would!!! And no, you can't have it! I drove over 16 miles to pick this puppy up!!:-)
This may be my last post on the forum as I am going to the garage tomorrow and attempt to dismantle it. WHEN i screw up the screen and start screaming, my wife has orders to come and shoot me...
Thanks for nothing all you lazy non-screen dismantling chickens!
Best,
Chris

I wish you the best of luck man. I'm up in Rockford and was trying to get the screen also. If your wife can't do it if the surgery fails have her send me a PM and I'll drive down.

I take it that the screen is a 2.35:1 AR.

I'm guessing since we didn't hear from you we need to call the PD on your wife for assisted suicide??

Chris,

I'm sorry to here about your situation. Thank goodness wives are understanding, and you can be secure in knowing this will never again be brought up . Seriously, I would call Vutec for advice. They may advice you not to do it, but maybe they could at least let you know if it's an option. Good Luck, and let us know how it works out for you.

OK, not much of an update, but because inquiring minds want to know if I am still alive. I did not get a chance to attempt to dismantle it but plan on doing so tonight. Was going to do it last night, but well....24 was on and wife said no way even though we have DVR's. So this may be my last post...
Chris

PS Ray, I am not calling Vutec because I know they will say I am insane....

How did it go? Inquiring minds wish to know and I'm sure someone in the future may have the same dilemma as you.

It can be done. There are just clips on the back side that hold on the "material". The tricky part is protecting the material when moving it. It is very fragile and not really meant to be touched.

Don't get mad at yourself...I got my 103" Silverstar into my theater (but I was still in construction of the entrance of the theater). Well, I now have no way to get the screen out. So should I decide to change it, looks like a sawsall is in order.

UPDATE!!! SURGERY SUCCESSFUL!!!
Well after numerous things coming up, I finally got a chance to take a look at the screen. PIECE OF CAKE! Took all the aluminum channels off of the back of the frame. Got a very clean sheet and carefully lifted the drywall....I mean screen out and leaned it against a wall. Took the top bar off and VOILA...down the basement stairs it went. Of course, I now have to put it back together but being as I labeled everything it should be another cake walk. I doubt if you could hurt the FRAME with a forklift as it is super sturdy, but be careful with the screen material.
Bottom line is if I can do it by myself, any body can, cause i am titally lame when it comes to fixing and repairing things.
Best,
Chris

A few months ago, I read your post & got so paranoid that I built a test frame out a 2x4's. It was the same size as the screen frame to see if it fit in my basement. It cleared by less than 2". When I tried to take the screen downstairs in the crate it would not fit.... it was that close.

I recommend spending the $20 to test before buying the screen.

Just got my 123" SS delivered today - what a beast in that crate! Fortunately I don't have the issues with getting it in my room - glad to see it worked out for you.

WELL WORTH THE HEADACHES AND HASSLES!!!
OMG! I LOVE this screen. Fired up Casino Royale last night on my PS3 and was totally blown away! I doubt if I can ever ever go back to another un-highpowered screen. I see why people love high powered screens now!
Also, if anyone need any pointers in taking it apart, feel free to email me. It is quite simple but a bit unnerving knowing the price of this screen should you screw up!
Best,
Chris
