Some Great New Music I Picked Up

I recently have picked up some great CDs and thought you might be interested in checking them out. My listening tastes are mainly non-mainstream, intelligent rock, but I also enjoy some lighter stuff.

Anyways, I am listening to "Neon Bible" from Arcade Fire, and I am blown away! This is very satisfying and enjoyable.

Other recent additions to my library:

Midlake - "The Trials of VAN OCCUPANTHER" (this is simply fantastic)
Youth Group - "Skeleton Jar" and also "Casino Twilight Dogs" (another great band)
Mew - "Frengers" and "The Glass Handed Kites" (I LOVE THIS BAND - They are coming to the US soon, if you're interested)

Well, I'm always on the lookout for new good music, so I thought you might enjoy hearing about some of the recent finds that I believe are definitely worth checking out.

I knew that Arcade Fire had a new one on the way, but didn't know it was out yet. I will pick it up this weekend. I have read good things about Midlake, but can't find their CD in a store (I hate buying online.)
Modest Mouse has a new release due soon. They are one of my all-time favorite bands.

Not that you have to comply, but a lot of us post new (or currently being listened to) discs in the "What's in you CD player" thread just to keep things all in one place. Discussion is allowed there too. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=636609

I found Midlake and Mew and bought them. I agree with your assessment, excellent. Another good one I just discovered is The Good, the Bad, and the Queen.

Mew's "And the Glass Handed Kites" hasn't left my cd player in months

PULLIAMM - Thanks for the suggestion, I have looked into The Good, the Bad, and the Queen, and I like what I hear.

It's difficult to find this music because the only place that I hear new music that I really like is on XM, and my friends don't like much outside of the mainstream, so I appreciate hearing suggestions from others that tend to like the same music I do. Where do you guys hear about new music?

I also have been listening to "Twin Cinema" from The New Pornographers, and think it's pretty good. I absolutely connect with about half the songs on the CD and am sort of apathetic about the other half. My wife and I have been totally digging on Ladytron for several months now. If you like an electronica type sound (that isn't typical techno bore), you might want to check them out. For me, I liked them on first listen, and by the 5th time through the CD I thought I would never stop listening to it.

Anyway, if you guys have any suggestions that you think I might like, I would be grateful to hear them.

I like "Twin Cinema", but I thought their previous CD "Electric Version" was better. Also, Neko Case's solo stuff is excellent. In the electronica style, definitely check out Goldfrapp and Venus Hum (both are among my top favorites.) Some other great bands that I have started to think of as "mainstream", but that many seem not to have discovered yet include Modest Mouse, The Shins, and Rilo Kiley.

I really like The New Pornographers, too. Have you listen to A.C. Newman's solo album? Most of it would fit on any NP album and hold its own.
