What is THIS problem with The Thing?????

i've been trying to figure this out for the longest time but still have no definite answer:

Look at the HD DVD version, or any actually, of The Thing at time 4:34 where you see the wooden sign. look closely at the sign and you will see the color shift from a natural wood color to a light bluish tint. this happens all throughout the movie but i'm trying to find a place where it's easily noticeable. back in the days of VHS i was told that was due to the copy protection. but i don't think it would be there on hd dvd.

1. Does anyone else see it?

2. Does anyone know what it is?

The Bluish tint could well be Sonys latest attempt at subliminal advertising

Never noticed it. I'll check it out though.

Its a known problem with the current digital masters of 'The Thing'.

Noticed a slight blue tint on the wood sign, I belive it was 4:30. Never noticed this before.

It's Universal's in-movie sign that they're going neutral. They could have chosen any other color for the tint change, but they decided to go with a "blu"e-ish one.

I never noticed it and I watched it twice =)

It's the thing changing in the wood sign

I see it too
Purple cycling on all the outside scenes, there is also a vertical discoloured strip tracking the dog as it runs across the snow.
It's nasty .........

i notice it for sure, there just seems to be a divide on whether people's eyes can pick up on color shifting or not.

The Criterion BLACK NARCISSUS had some of the worst color shifting i have ever seen, but 99% of the reviews praised it for being perfect.

If your talking about what happens during the scene where they descend to the alien ship...I first noticed it on the original dvd release....you can see it clearly on the HD-DVD. I always thought it was just shadows from cloud coverage during the filming...just a guess.
Why don't we just ask McCready?

I've watched the HD-DVD of the Thing probably about 10 times since I've gotten it... I've recalibrated a few times with AVIA, and yesterday was the first time I saw the color thing. When McReady and Copper are walking to the helicopter to check out the Swedes, it shift to a very light blue for half a second. This is the first time I've seen it... odd.

it happens in many spots throughout the film.

don't get me wrong...this is a great HD transfer and miles ahead of how it's looked on any previous format.

It's a color timing change that may have been a few frames off when the transfer was made. The colored strip that tracks the dog may be a power window, but that would only apply to the most recent transfers, as that feature was unavailable on telecine machines several years back.

You guys are damn perceptive! I missed it, of course I wasn't looking for it, but now that its been pointed out, yes, it is there, the qucik color change-then back...oh well, considering how great the rest looks, I can live with it being "less then perfect." =)
