anyone used or heard of Audiosphere Research? Massive speakers with 18" woofers! - Page 2

Here's another new poster, thanks to these 18L's. I acquired mine about six months ago for $100. Good cosmetic condition and imho, these beasts sound wonderful. Freakin' loud. I keep hooking them up to louder amps (currently powered by a Kenwood KM-208) and so far, these cabs have never let me down. And if that ain't enough, sitting on top are a pair of the AX Monitor 15's ($25. Thank you very much CL) that I use as my front speakers for surround and I gotta say I love these babies, too. Given their age, all the individual speakers (tweets, mids and woofers) are excellent shape and appear to have stood the test of time quite well. Should you come across them, grab 'em, especially if you can get them for even twice what I paid (I just about scored another pair of the 18L's for $40. So close...dammit). Both pairs have spec sheets attached from the factory and if anyone wants, I'll post either or both.

I just joined to comment on this thread for these awsome cool speakers.
I was in the market for quality large big sound speaker in the mid 90's ( I was 16 years old ) and was looking for your typical big name speakers VEGAS JBLS BOSE etc.... and then I came accross these speakers AUDIOSPHERE RESEARCH I had never heard of them, but a DJ was selling them and his turntables his advert in the local Buy & Sell magazine said these are very powerfull mosnster speakers,.. I went over to his house to see and hear them, they were ugly vaneer brown I belive and monster huge with BIG powerfull clean sound... seemed like a high quality speaker to me so I paid the man $600 and stuffed the speakers into the back of my crown vic woody wagon,... I sanded down the outside and gave them a gloss black paint job and grills in the front of the 18's, I have been enjoing the professional clean and beautiful sound for over 15 years now and absoloutly love these speakers. p.s. I power them from an old 1971 Fisher RS-1040 amplifer

I was always told if they sound good to you, then there good speakers. I remember when I bought my several years old Boston Towers and the pair were like $1,000 back in the day. They had a higher price version for like $1,200-$1,300 a pair as I recall and to me in that "Good Guys" listening room didn't sound as good. Went with my ear at least back then. I am more informed now but it's all about how they sound in my opinion. Good luck

I heard audiospheres 18ls these speakers sound good with the right setting ; a friend bought a pair for 60;00 bucks he hooked them up and they sounded good.there is a another set of 18s called ax6 how do now that i own 2 sets THE 18Ls have bullet tweeters ax6 has piazo horn tweeters.the ax woofers came with form surround 18ls had cloth And these ax speakers were Audio Research made by audiosphere how do i know the fella named mike knows the guy that worked at Audiosphere his job was building these speakers today he owns his own speaker company called ACUUSOUND.I had to order a new set of 18s which are more powerful then the others @ 650w to1300p 8ohm and as being crap speakers some people just don't know all the facts.THE other thing is you don;t need alot of power to run these .

Hello, yes I bought mine about 25 years ago and have two sets, one in front room and other set downstairs. They are referred to as monitor 18's and they are 400 watts with the woofer being in a seperate compartmant so you don't get any distortion to your midrange and tweeters. This is the reason I went for these over all others that were on the market. The list price on these was $1400.00 a pair and that was in roughly 1989 when I bought them. My uncle jack played for Motown and was Marvin Gay's road drummer and his speakers were custom built and his woofer is mounted in front facing the back and is tunneled to the rear and in it's own inclosure and these are as close as I could come to the same idea. Jack paid $1600.00 for speakers and crossovers plus had the cabinets specially made out of cherry wood. His are same height as mine but about double the width. He is out of my price range as his tube amp and tube preamp cost him $16000.00 but money is no object for him wish I could say the same. Why they went with a 18 inch woofer is because the voice coil sits 8 inches back from your midrange and tweeters so it gives you that special range feeling like the base is coming from behind the speaker. Since they were $1400.00 back then I couldn't imagine what a set of this quality would cost today but today they don't put out quality like we seen growing up back then. I would never sell these and hope this gives you a bit of insight on the audioshere speakers. George
