I was a big fan of the Amped series--especially #2. I was very disappointed in what they did to the series in #3.
I picked up a copy of Tony Hawk Project 8 off ebay last week for around $30.
I'm impressed with the game. You can start off the game with a tutorial if you choose--I definatly recommend this. There are a ton of moves and combos that can be done. It can be difficult to pull some of these moves off in the tutorial. Took me a whole lot of trys to complete it.
Once you pass the tutorial and head on to the career it starts you off in a small suburban neighborhood where there are bunch of different small missions for you to accomplish. It has the typical grinds, plants and jumps for you to try and pass. Once you pass enough of them you can open up the next area to skate in usually by doing a wall plant against the door or fence that is closing off that area.
While at first I crashed non stop, I've started landing more and more combos and have finished a bunch of the challenges. They have a waypoint system which is nice--it tells you which challenges you've attempted and which ones you've passed. Setting a way point allow you to find the challenges you haven't complete easily.
The one thing that takes some getting used to is the speed at which the game travels---with Amped it was a little more slow and methodical and in a lot of respects, easier because of that. But what impressed my most about this title is the insane amount of tricks and button combos there are. It blows Amped out of the water in terms of that.
Amped had Grinds, butters, jumps & plants. Tony Hawk has all three of those plus wall riding, wall plants. Plus, from butters there are so many move combos---yy, xy, bb, etc. The same with Grinds--depending on which way you are pointing the left thumbstick you go into different grinds. If anyone knows where I can find a full move set list for this game, please let me know. The world itself is just loaded with trick possibilities.
The graphics aren't too stunning--but they are pretty decent. The slow motion when you max out your meter is a cool special effect.
I'd give this game a solid 8.5 out of 10.
