If you like Amped 2 you'll like Tony Hawk Project 8

I was a big fan of the Amped series--especially #2. I was very disappointed in what they did to the series in #3.

I picked up a copy of Tony Hawk Project 8 off ebay last week for around $30.

I'm impressed with the game. You can start off the game with a tutorial if you choose--I definatly recommend this. There are a ton of moves and combos that can be done. It can be difficult to pull some of these moves off in the tutorial. Took me a whole lot of trys to complete it.

Once you pass the tutorial and head on to the career it starts you off in a small suburban neighborhood where there are bunch of different small missions for you to accomplish. It has the typical grinds, plants and jumps for you to try and pass. Once you pass enough of them you can open up the next area to skate in usually by doing a wall plant against the door or fence that is closing off that area.

While at first I crashed non stop, I've started landing more and more combos and have finished a bunch of the challenges. They have a waypoint system which is nice--it tells you which challenges you've attempted and which ones you've passed. Setting a way point allow you to find the challenges you haven't complete easily.

The one thing that takes some getting used to is the speed at which the game travels---with Amped it was a little more slow and methodical and in a lot of respects, easier because of that. But what impressed my most about this title is the insane amount of tricks and button combos there are. It blows Amped out of the water in terms of that.

Amped had Grinds, butters, jumps & plants. Tony Hawk has all three of those plus wall riding, wall plants. Plus, from butters there are so many move combos---yy, xy, bb, etc. The same with Grinds--depending on which way you are pointing the left thumbstick you go into different grinds. If anyone knows where I can find a full move set list for this game, please let me know. The world itself is just loaded with trick possibilities.

The graphics aren't too stunning--but they are pretty decent. The slow motion when you max out your meter is a cool special effect.

I'd give this game a solid 8.5 out of 10.

If it ran faster than 5.3325 frames per second on my Xbox I would love it to death! But at times it is almost unplayable due to frame rate drops.

Anyone know if they have released a patch lately? The leaderboards were always messed up and for some reason had me #2 in one of the categories. I need to toss this game back in and play some graffiti and trick attack this weekend...

You know, I didn't see the framerate problems everyone else is talking about.

It had the occasional FR issue for me before the 1st patch was released sometime in Dec. Since then I don't remember any issue, of course I probably haven't played the game for a couple months...

Only framerate problems for me is when I skate from one "area" to another.

I loved Tony Hawk 2, and but TH3 and 4 left me cold..too fast, too much twitch gameplay.

I love the Project 8 demo, but I also know that Tony Hawk games tend to get repetitive, especially if you can't seem to pull off some insane combo to progress in the game or whatever, so I really wont buy until its $20 bucks.....

I noticed all kinds of frame rate problems. It did make the game almost unplayable at times. some areas were fine and the games is fantastic, but as soon as you get to an area that chugs along, its a disgrace

Like where?

ie: I dont own the game yet.....is it like, massive areas, or is it like only a certain area that you can avoid.....??

That is odd. I've not noticed any frame rate problems, but maybe that is just me.

I'm really enjoying Project 8 now that I got a change to tyr it. TheNail the Trick mode is a lot of fun.

i'm guessing people with framerate problems arent running the game at an ATSC standard resolution.

it's just a guess though
