OCUR = open cable *UNI*directional receiver

The *uni*directional nature of these CableCard 1.0 tuners will not allow them to communicate back to the cable system to allow SDV to work. You'll have to wait for CC2 support (which could be a while).

so basically the computer i just purchased will be usless.

Chris,

Have you noticed de-interlacing on 1080i content using MS's built in MPEG2 decoder. Any fast moving scenes look pretty bad. I noticed this awhile ago but I switched to using Cyberlink's MPEG2 decoder and this worked great. However now with OCUR the content is flagged protected and Cyberlink's decoder doesn't work so I'm back to using MS's MPEG2 decoder and now 1080i content and now I'm stuck with terrible de-interlacing.

Of course not. MSO's will probably keep all of the most popular channels off SDV at first. You might miss a few outlying channels, but it will be some time before SDV prevents you from watching the vast majority of programming on your cable system.

It's hard to know what the future will bring, but I would expect a CC2 tuner will be made available.

Funny you mentioned that, I have a system at home that I was playing some My Little Pony DVDs for my daughter that exhibited non-existent de-interlacing. It was a bummer of an experience. I would hope that it's a driver issue. What video card are you using?

FYI, we just got a great tool from Intel to help us verify our work - this is a big deal. I swear I can taste it...

ATI x1950 with latest 7.2 Catalyst. Are you using ATI or Nvidia?

If you install PowerDVD 7 (even the trial) and use vmcd.exe to switch Media Center to use PowerDVD's decoder you'll probably see that this issue is gone, but PowerDVD decoder will give you a black screen when you try to play OCUR content. You'll have to run vmcd.exe again and switch back to the MS decoder.

I'm using the same card...

It should be noted that Microsoft does not have an agreement for CC2 support with CableLabs....that discussion is ongoing.

Is there an official 2.0 standard yet? I thought it was still being hammered out with two very different opinions about how it should look.

One of the major issues was the ability for the cable company to push java code & updates to the host machine (not just the card). I'm hoping that if it is a requirement, that the data would only be pushed as far as the tuner device (it would be the "host machine"), and not require any data to pass to the pc. I would also hope that there is considerable security to prevent the tuner from being able to send or execute malicious code on the associated computer. I'd hate for a whole new class of viruses to start coming through the cable feed.

If anyone knows, I'd like to hear more about the current standing of CC2 and whether the existing MCE security requirements (DHCP/etc) will still be sufficient to keep CableLabs happy.

I eagerly await the day when this nonsense is all sorted out. What this industry needs is more standardization and enforcement. So many different HD formats and options actually serve to harm the consumer because little is ultimately getting done.

I suspect that IPTV options will be sorted out long before CableLabs gets around to doing the same. One day they are going to wake up and realize that MCE, AppleTV, Uverse, Joost, TiVo, Amazon, etc. have got it all figured out without them. Fortunately for them, that day is still more than a year away.

Chris, do you have any read on how long it will take VM to catch up assuming you can start building/shipping on the 15th?

Typically, when the order status changes to "staged" how long are we looking before actual shipment?

Thanks!
We had Intel engineers over today and were reviewing some tools they gave us and we also built a system to overnight to the eHome team at MS. So everyone's geared up and we're confident this will be resolved shortly.
Ok chris, enough kissing the baby, back to the dungeon for you. Get back to work!

J/K, hopefully this will all be resolved shortly.

Chris,

Has Velocity Micro looked into incorporating any of the new HDMI Video Cards into the Media Center PCs?
Yes, we'll be looking at doing that when the next gen of cards are available.
Chris, how is the hotfix installation going? Are you on track to begin shipping tomorrow?

I appreciate how you have openly communicated in this forum. It sets Velocity Micro apart from the rest.

Funny thing is we have the hotfix and now we're working on a BIOS issue...ETA could be any minute...we don't know but we have a system at MS that arrived today and we're taking care of it.

Everything looks to be working 100%. At this point we're going to knock the crap out of it in every way we can think of and I expect our customers will be receiving their systems within the next week and a half (Depending on shipping method.)

Chris,

Which CableCARD and provider(s) are you currently testing with. Do you know if they are a mixed analog and digital?
We're using a Scientific Atlanta card on Comcast in Richmond, VA. I can tune both digital and analog channels.

I'm pretty excited about this. I have to admit, I won't be buying one this year - but I'm still pretty excited.
