For anyone with one on order or just contemplating, you might head over to the Tivo community forums-in the Series 3 forum are a bunch of subforums for each major and some minor cablecos. Tivo S3 has been using the same basic tech (cablecard) for almost six months, so others before you have worked out some kinks.
One thing for Chris M.-all of the Tivo people say the easiest way to get installers comfortable is to provide written instructions as to what they need to do and in which order (insert the first card in slot 1, blah, blah, blah). In addition, they offer to walk a tech through the install on the phone, if problems are occuring. finally, you might include the cablelabs list of approved devices with model numbers and types-some folks have had problems getting the cableco to roll a truck if they say "Tivo" even though its on the approved list. I've attached the pdf from the cablelabs site-the ATI devices are at the top.
the good news is that all cablecos seem to have some techs more than qualified to do the installs. However, like all cablecos their dispatch management cosists of "roll truck" and "don't roll truck" with no skills qualifier. How these people sleep at night I don't know.
Plase post your reports!
