Hey guys, been searching the internet for quite a while no with absolutely no luck. I am looking for a relatively inexpensive player that will do dvd-audio and sacd. Does such a thing exist? I thought I had bough one on ebay. It was a sony from 2003. But the guy never sent it. So its back to the drawing board.

Sony's won't do DVD-A, it's a competing format. I picked up a Yamaha DVD-C750 off e-bay and so far I'm very happy with it. If you don't need a changer look for a Yamaha or a Denon. I'm not sure how cheap you want to go. I had a Panasonic F87 ($100) for awhile, I noticed a big difference in SQ when I went to the Yamaha. Pioneer, Denon and Yamaha make decent DVD-A and SACD combi-players.

No kidding? I thought that sony made a player that did both in 2002-3ish? Anyway, I'm not surprised that the brands you mentioned sound better. I know sony isn't the greatest, I've just always had them and liked them. I'll look into the 3 brands you mentioned. Thanks for your input!

To make a long story short, I posted looking for a dvd-sacd player because I was under the impression that the one I bought on ebay was never going to arive. Turns out I did get it 3 weeks late (today). Anyway, it is a Sony 5 Disc Changer DVD/CD/SACD Player - DVP-NC685V. Does anyone have this or has any thoughts on the quality or lack of quality? I'd use it mostly for sacd and dvd-a.
thanks!

I can't comment on the quality of that Sony unit, but it won't play DVD-A discs. A few other brands to check out besides Yamaha, Denon, and Pioneer are Marantz and Cambridge Audio. Marantz is usually higher priced than these other brands, but as with most of them, there are some good deals on older or refurbished models from authorized online dealers. And then there's the Oppo 970, of course, too. Normally $150 but I think they have some cheaper refurbished units.

Hey guys... thanks for everyones input. The dvd-sacd player came in today. I brought it home-hooked it up, and it seems to be working great. Even plays DVD-A! So I am pretty happy. I was able to get out my old cd player and dvd-dvda player as well.
anyway, thanks again!

I don't believe Sony has a player that will play DVD-A. Are you sure it isn't a Dolby Digital or DTS disc.

You know, I am confused as well. It would make sense that they wouldn't play being a competing format. But I tried all 3 DVD-A disks that I have and it played them flawlessly. They were neil young-harvest, Glen Phillips-Albulum, and Crosby and Nash-Another Starry Evening. They specifically say DVD-audio on all of them.

Yes but almost all DVD-Audio discs have a DolbyDigital and/or DTS track on them for backwards compatibility with regular DVD players. There are NO Sony players that will play the DVD-A tracks of any disc. As another has said, you are probably listening to one of the lower resolution tracks. Check what you are listening to by displaying the player's output OSD as it plays.

Well that sucks. Funny because I was surprised how good one of them sounded compared to the original DVD-a disk.

You are exactly right Kal, it was reading DTS and DD.

Oppo and Samsung make low-priced universal players.

I would also recommend the Oppo units. They're inexpensive but capable. The DV970HD is probably the best for audio, while the DV980HD is better for video. Also, Reference Audio Mods will take one of these and turn it into a pretty nice unit. Follow the link and click on the Oppo and you'll get good information regarding the differences amongst the models, too.

Once again: There are NO Sony players that will play the DVD-A tracks of any disc.

Right, it doesn't. It was reading DTS. From the things I have been reading it has a lot to do with politics. In fact a lot of what I read has a lot to do with Sony and politics. Unfortunately I've already got the player, and the receiver for that matter. I do enjoy the sound. For whats it worth. Although I know I'm sure there is far superior sound out there for the same price.

oh, if anyway has the time and or patients, as i'm just getting into sacd. I guess there are various types of sacd? I went to my local best buy, that had about 10 titles in there whole section. The only one that I found mildly attractive was a credence one. Got it home played it and it sounded aweful! Come to find out it a sacd-stereo mix? I guess that is almost the worst, next to mono mix. Anyway, my next purchase was eat a peach by the allmans, as its a classic album, but I also noticed its a sacd-multi track. Now I did find that to be a much improved mix, and the separation was superb, but I wasn't blown away by the sound. Is it just not a great mix, or do I have some settings issues to work out?
thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

If you want to hear what SACD is about, buy something newly recorded, not remixed/remastered oldies.

It was probably due to the mix, Joe. Try the Steely Dan "Gaucho" SACD. It is mixed beautifully and sounds fantastic. You might also try Aimee Mann's "Lost in Space" SACD. Again beautifully mixed and sounds great. For classical music, there is a Holst the Planets SACD that is really outstanding. I can't remember the artist who conducted it, but you can do a Google search on that in connection with SACD to find it. This version also has the conductor's composition of "Pluto" included with Holst's original seven planets, obviously before the ninth planet was "De-Plutoed" by the Astronomical Society .

Hey thanks for the input Jack... I'm more into classic rock or modern rock, but Amy Mann might work. I've heard good things about Mark Knofler's Shangra-la album. Anyone heard that one? I've just heard the stereo mix of "boom like that" and it seemed good.

I really wish they would release Tomita's "synthesized" interpretation in 5.1 - that would sure be a great listen, also .

I wish they just did everything in 5.1 high rez, stupid format war killed any chance of that

imagine for a moment there were 2 competing HDTV formats, you purchased one, loved it, and then went back to standard def when they stopped making HDTV sets and programs
