Samsung 3296 paired with what DVD player?

Hello all,

First time poster and new to the HD game, yadda yadda.

So, I'm upgrading our bedroom first of all areas since we do most of our movie watching in there. I've narrowed the choice down to the Samsung 3296. I'd love to try to force a 40" TV in the same spot, but the wife won't go for it (and it may be just a bit too large - shame there's nothing in the 36" range that's as good).

What I need to figure out is what DVD player to match with it. It will need to play DVRs (which I think most are good with now anyway) and should have HDMI output. I currently have a Sony NS41P that won't really fit the bill with the new Samsung. The folks at BB recommended the Samsung 860 as a basic fit. Is this a good unit? Do I need to spend more than $100-150?

Also, anything particular I should consider when upgrading the cable box? I think the 3296 has a tuner, so do I even need a new box?

Thanks in advance!

I guess this unit is junk or not very popular then, eh?

I think the problem is that "what DVD player should I buy for my xyz display" postings are so common here that the people who have opinions and info get tired of answering them, or presume the poster will eventually look around at the other threads.

I've been very happy with Oppo players.

Thanks! I totally understand the hesitancy to post - there just seems to be a lot of chaff in the decision space and no real clarity on recommendations, even though there seem to be many common needs. Past experience tells me there's usually one killer model in each basic category that's a must-have, but I guess I've been spoiled by PC modding.

Anyway, thanks again... I'll have to check out the Oppo's. Are they a relatively new brand? I'd never heard of them until coming here.

They've been around for a few years. Not in stores; you have to buy direct or from a few resellers. 1 year warranty, 30-day return.

Their reputation comes from good quality products with features that people here want. Outstanding customer support, regular firmware updates.

For your 32" screen the 970 at $149 is a bargain. I use the 971 and 981 with a 37", but I always wanted to demo the 970. You can see model features compared here: http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_comp.html

Whatever you choose, use a calibration disc for best results.

Excellent - thanks again!

Those features do, indeed, seem well suited to my situation.

I'm definitely going to pick up the Avia Guide to Home Theater, which seems to be well liked here.

Somewhat OT, but can you fit a 37-inch? Sharp LC-37D62U, for example?

Not too OT Actually... I made a few cardboard cut-outs for the spot on the wall and it looks like 32" is the sweet spot. Anything bigger may be a bit overpowering. The Sharp 32D62U has some great specs though - a bit better than the new Samsung.

Wonder what the chances are of seeing any of these in-person locally. The stores nearby have complete crap right now... but it seems like they're just clearing out all the post-holiday leftovers to make room for all the new models.
