I am a sports fan and enjoy playing sports games on consoles since I'm not tremendously talented. While paying I came up with some ideas for a new-gen basketball game.
First, you create a player that you can take online. The easiest way would be to have pre-rendered character models to choose from representing many different races and body types. I say this just to avoid having to upload your "created model." Then you need to determine your players "style of play." There could be a set number of styles with emphasis on different skills. Your player may be best at long range shooting, dunking, rebounding, defense, etc. Of course, each style also needs to have its own weaknesses as well.
I picture playing online with a 3rd person over-the-shoulder point of view somewhat like in Gears of War or Ghost Recon. This puts you into the player, but at the same time gives you a pretty decent view of the surrounding court. It would be ideal for your character to be persistent, tracking and saving all your stats from each game played.
I can also imagine basketball "clans" in which the clan makes up 1 entire team. It could make for some fun clan wars.
