S-Video vs VGA vs R/G/B/HSync/VSync

Howdy,

I have a Sharp XG-E1200U projector. It works great but is really old so only has inputs for S-Video, VGA, and the old 5 port R, G, B, H-sync, V-sync hook ups.

User's Manual Link - Inputs on page 5

When playing from my DVD player that has S-Video and Component outputs, I want to get the best picture quality I can. Would I get any increase in picture quality from S-Video by getting some sort of converter (assuming they exist) to go from Component Out to the r/g/b/h/v inputs on the projector? Or even Component to VGA maybe?

Just wondering it the picture quality would be noticeably better (on a pretty huge screen ) if I looked into something like this.

Thanks!

You would get much better picture using a scaling DVD player that has VGA/RGBHV outputs like the Momitsu and others.

Well, unfortunatley, buying a new DVD player isn't in the budget any time soon so I'm just looking to get the best I can out of the ones I already own which all have Component and S-Video only.

Well unfortunately a decent transcoder to convert component to RGB will cost as much or more than a new player with RGB output.

I noticed by the links what you are attempting to do, looks fun. Since you are on a budget, I would stick with S Video. Like Dokworm said, you can't use Component on that LCD projector. Have you thought about using a laptop computer or just a computer with a DVD drive in it? You could use the VGA output on the pc. That would get you a better picture also because you could scale the image to something native to the projector, like 800x600 by the looks of it. That's a pretty old LCD projector.

Also, you are in the wrong forum, this is for CRT FP, not LCD FP. Good Luck though!

Your only other 'no budget' option would be to use a PC computer as the signal source. Set the video output card to 800 X 600, and buy a $25.00 5' SVGA to 5 BNC cable. That should give you a better image than what you have now.

In know that this sounds stupid. I got a new Sony DVD player and the picture was much better via S-video than component. Tim Martin agreed when he was here.

Doh. Didn't realize I was in the wrong forum. Heh. Oops.

And I didn't think about the laptop idea. I guess I'd take an upshot in the video department but a downshot in the audio department since Id' be using the headphone jack output to the receiver instead of the nice optical cable.

But if the VGA would look better than the S-Video I use now, I might just have to give that a try.

Thanks all!
