Mass storage based/useable head unit?

Hey all, as spring approaches it's looking like time to get out my Mustang again. One of the things it "needs" (asside from tires and therefor wheels ) is a new head unit. My current Alpine 3DA is on it's last legs, it's been having trouble with the cartridge for some time, and is beginning to be more sensitive to bumps.

Anyway, I've become more and more accustom to not having to deal with discs at home and work due to storing my music on my media server (lossless) and using J River Media Center's smartlists to choose what I listen to. It's great, kind of like radio but only stuff I want to hear.

What I'm looking for, is some sort of head unit, or head unit+accessory that will allow me to take that same (or as close as possible) experience into my car. One solution would be a head unit with a built in HDD that I could load stuff onto (ideally lossless), >40GB would be idea. Another option would be something like a CD changer but that uses a Hard Drive instead of CDs.

One thing I really don't want to do is use "mp3 CDs". Ideally I'd like to not go the head unit+iPod route, seems kind of clunky.

Unfortunatly it looks like there's nothing like this out there. The only things Ive seen are some navigation systems with some pathetic capacities (10GB).

At one time I had thought I would build a car-PC, but I've since decided a "retail" solution would be preferable, unfortunately it looks like I may be forced to go the car-PC route to get the features/funtionality I want.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

You could get a headunit with a USB connection on it and run an external hard drive to it. Here is the list of headunits that have USB at Crtchfield.

I posted a long response here, but in short, I've done some more investigating, and I really like the looks of the Eclipse CD7100. It looks like it meets my most basic requirement (music not from CD), and has a lot of stuff that would be really cool, all for a price similar to building a custom carputer.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The Pioneer DEP-6900UB will do what you want. It has a USB connection at the back that can supply enough current to spin up a 2.5 inch HDD. The drive needs a \\genre\\artist\\album\\ filestucture but navigation is very fast. I posted a couple of times in the headunits that control ipods thread with more details.
