This 1 min video is a commentary on the proposed merger between Sirius and XM. It sort of makes fun of the idea of the government being resposible for tech industry decisions.

Makes a point but the infrastructure bandwidth is not there yet to support continuous two way streaming that you seem to be suggesting. Maybe in time after the government finishes the work they are doing with the second generation of the internet. Its kind of funny that the spokesperson pokes fun at the government yet brings up the internet as the killer of sat radio. I guess he really doesn't know where the internet came from and where the next generation will come from.

really it's about the two way vs one way comm.

I understand that the sat comm now is a one way communication to your car. How could it be any different? I've never heard of two way satellite communications.

Government created a lot of good things, including - originally the Internet.

It's not me saying that the Internet is a satellite radio "killer" it's the satellite radio companies themselves. They cite competition from portable files (and Internet) as its competition and reason why merging is their best bet to stay alive - and they're right!

Thanks Visionxorb. But these technologies aren't in your car. At least not yet.

I don't think Sat Radio needs to be two way either. It's just that it'll be difficult for it to compete with free two way Internet communications.

Isn't GM's OnStar a two-way communication system?

Their two way communication is through Verizon. BTW a lot of older OnStar vehicles may not have any communication if Verizon shuts down their analog transmissions as the FCC has stated that none of the cell phone companies needs to keep their analog transmissions operating.

There's no such thing as free two-way internet communications. (Or are you a slacker who can't appreciate such subtleties?)

And the above comment that there's nowhere near enough wireless bandwidth to carry all of satellite and terrestrial radio, television, voice and data is dead-on correct.

Even if there was enough bandwidth (as in your dreams), it sure as he11 wouldn't be free. That business model just doesn't pencil out.
