Just bought a Onkyo 704 A/V receiver and looking for a little advice on setup

So I have a pretty simple setup. I have a sony dvd player, dtv hd dvr and a samsung 46 inch dlp TV. I have some polk audio bookshelf speakers and adding a polk csm speaker.

Questions:

1) Should I run the component output from DVD player into the A/V receiver and then output from that to the TV or just run DVD to TV direct?

I am going to run digital optical from HD DVR to A/V as well as coax from DVD player to A/V with hdmi still going HD DVR to TV.

I run my dvd video (component) direct to the tv and the dvd audio (coax) direct to the receiver. But, I don't know what all the advantages/disadvantages are. That is just my preference (Yamaha receiver). It works fine for me. I don't have hdmi, though.
