That's because all other markets either switched to this game or shut off until 7 eastern. We're now on the HD "FLEX" coverage of the game. when it was in SD, we were seeing the SD "CONSTANT" feed of the game. The idiocy of this was discussed in the "M8B SPEAKS OUT ON MARCH MADNESS" thread. as the last post of that thread cogently pointed out, the irony of all this is that the people that would want to watch an entire game of local interest that turns into a blowout will have to sit through the whole game in SD once the rest of country flexes away from it (and they're left with only the SD constant feed.)
This is all CBS's fault, not D*'s, and apparently has to do with their central control system in NY not being up to the task just yet. However, at least we get PARTS of all games in HD this year as opposed to half of the early round games in HD last year. On the other hand, at least the constant feeds last year were, in my recollection, constantly in HD - so less frustration and annoyance!

Exactly. Even though we are only 1/4 through the 1st round of games, I already prefer last years setup. I'm sure people don't agree but last year my affiliate could put a different game on analog vs digital but they are not this year. Then you have this whole flex vs constant feed crap which means the games that supposedly matter most to local fans (local constant feeds) can only be seen in SD. I didn't end up forking out $70 for MMM because I thought there would be issues and I would end up being ticked off at CBS. At this point, I'm glad I didn't.
CBS has apparently never heard of the mantra - If you can't do something right, then don't do it all.

Now they finally put the WUSA GW game in HD.

My local station in Indy, WISH did the Butler-ODU in upconverted SD. The picture was AWFUL!!! An engineer from WISH who posts in our local forum said this afternoon that he has been told not to do anymore upconverted SD. I guess for the IU-Gonzaga game tonight it will be standard SD.

This probably sounds really strange, but I think that KIRO-DT in Seattle was feeding us an anamorphic picture on their "DT2" station (704x480i, 4:3) earlier. I have my Comcast STB set to stretch SD, the GW/Vand game appeared to be 16:9. So, on my HTPC I checked TSReader to confirm that it was SD and 4:3, and took this cap with ATI HDTV Wonder. Watching the game on Comcast, it was clearly 16:9 when stretched to 1.78:1, but also clearly SD. Is this possible?

Then I reformatted the original screen cap to 1.78 aspect ratio and wowzers...

Someone tell me I'm crazy...

Evening games have started, my local was a bit slow in getting to commercials and I got a CBS display that said "Lexington Constant" but the first game is in HD.

Still waiting to see what happes with the MSU game in 8 mins
post #71 of 268
As a poster requested, and a nice shot of the court as the game starts

Shockingly enough, MSU vs. Marquette is in HD in Lansing, MI via WLNS

VCU vs Duke on WCBS-DT NYC - FIOS TV NJ

Jefbal: I'm seeing the same game and my affiliate told me that we would get upconverted SD for this game because we are in Marquette market and therefore would get constant feed. But it sure looks like HD to me....not very good HD but HD nonetheless.

Same thing mine told me, but its definitely the HD feed. We'll have to wait and see if CBS decides to flex or if it stays HD the entire game

I really wonder sometimes how regional coverage is determined. There's a Weber State-UCLA game going right now, and the the VCU-Duke game just went to the half tied up, and KIRO-DT is still going to show me the crappy Ohio State-CCST game where OSU has a 195 point lead at the half. Please tell me that when the UCLA game comes back, KIRO-DT is going to whip me around from the stupid OSU game and let me watch UCLA, a Pac-10 team, or the potential upset VCU-Duke game.

At least the games are in HD now. Earlier today I was getting only SD feeds. This is my first year attempting to watch the Madness in HD, so I don't know how it was in previous years, but if you ask me I would say that CBS/KIRO-DT coverage of this tournament in HD is just a huge clusterf*ck and a joke.

Game is in SD on WISH in Indy. Is everybody seeing this game in SD?
Oh thank God, they finally switched from the OSU-CCST game to Duke-VCU here in Seattle. Thank you!

Go VCU! Beat Puke!

Nope Saw HD before the MSu game started and during our half time

Jefbal: Ok, my affiliate just switched over to SD when CBS changed to the Duke game. So I guess they are showing HD until CBS makes a switch in games and then they go to SD to keep the same game on. Not what my affiliate told me would happen but I'll take it.
CBS just "flexed" to the Duke vs. VCU game and CBS immediately went to commercial. MSU is handling Marquette quite well, so I hope we stick with the Duke game for awhile.

And as I type, WLNS switched to the constant SD feed of the MSU game.

They gave us as much HD as they could so far so I do take my hat off to them and I'll be sending a nice email to the Program Manager at WLNS thanking them for the decision to stay with the HD coverage as long as they could.
Now the question is will they switch back to HD if CBS goes back to the Marq/Mich St game?

I hope so, but if it stays 10+ points and the Duke game stays close, I can't see them flexing back

Edit in: Just reading on the D* MMM thread and all feeds have flexed to the Duke game, its the only game being shown HD by CBS right now. Everything else has been dropped into SD constant feeds.

This Flex/Constant business is just goofy. I understand it but it's still goofy.

What is up with that other scores bar? Was it that big last year? I don't remember if it was, but that is a HUGE distraction. That's worse than the score bar on NFL Network! Once upon a time CBS put a little gray box in one corner and scrolled other scores that way. It was unobtrusive but still useful. Why does this one hang so low on the screen?
The score bar was the same size last year, because we complained about it then too I don't mind the size of the score bar, but it would look a lot better if the background was more transparent, so it would blend in with the game. Now, the size and location and lack of transparency give the illusion of cutting off 1/6 the screen.

I don't understand all this flex/constant stuff, and I don't want anyone to try and explain it to me.
Simple question, will the Gonzaga game be HD on KIRO Seattle? If it's not that's crap. (I wish FOX had the Final Four now! )
fatguy, i just looked and yes kiro will have gonzaga game in hd. so it says
