Forum area to cover other electronics (5.8 Ghz phones)?

is there an area within AVS where people can discuss electronics not specific to A/V?

I ask because we AVSers are a tough group to please, so when it comes time to needing a recommendation for a product there's no better group to ask!

As an example - right now I am in the market for a cordless 5.8Ghz phone system for the home with digital answering machine and 4 hand sets. I'd love to get recommendations from other AVSers on which product to go with. However I do not see a suitable place to post such messages (or even a free-for-all thread maybe?). Thanks!

Right. And the concept of selling jewelry, electronics, and kitchen-ware was a foreign concept to Amazon.com at one point too - now those items make up a far greater % of their revenue than books.

I am suggesting that AVS may want to consider branching our a bit, which I believe can be done without diluting their core market of AV gear. All it takes is its own forum to keep such markets separate.

The key point is that AVS can easily leverage its existing pool of bright contributors into other areas and continue building its audience.

For example I've spent years contributing regularly to the front projection threads and have a lot of online "friends" that I post with on a regular basis. These are people who are technical and detailed oriented and who's opinions I trust. It would be great to post a message to these folks to ask for their recommendations like "Hey who can recommend a feature-rich, reliable cordless phone?" or "What GPS are you guys using and recommend?"

My suggestion would be for AVS to start an Electronics main forum where people can ask for recommendations on things like laptops, cell phones, PDAs, GPS, digital cameras - whatever. If it does well they can look at breaking that up into sub forums. If it doesn't do great they just take that forum off line and no loss. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
