New show: Black Donnellys (NBC)

If recent shows are any indication, the fact that this new show is actually really good, probably means that it won't be around too long, but none the less I am going to put out a recommendation for it, just in case you haven't checked it out yet.

This shows follows four brothers from an Irish-American family called the Donnellys. They're a working class gang that have always ended up on the wrong side of trouble. The narration side of the story is told by one of their friends who's currently in lock-up. They get into some trouble with the Italian mob, so they seek help from the Irish mob, who they're buddies with anyway.

There are alot of similarities to the Sopranos, but whereas the Sopranos focuses on the guys at the top, this show focuses on the guys at the bottom of the mob food chain. These guys are not "made men" they're just street thugs. However, just like the Sopranos, the show is incredibly well made, especially considering that it's network television.

Back in the 1800's there really was a Donnelly family that was known as the Black Donnellys, here's the Wiki piece about them:

Here's the shows homepage at NBC.COM:

You can watch full-length episodes on NBC.COM here:

Yeah, I've watched the first two episodes so far. Not too shabby. I think it'd work better as a limited-run or mini-series, but I'll watch it for a while. It is well written, and I really like the Joey Ice-Cream framing device. [It's used well, to great effect.]

Just FYI, if after watching the most recent episode you get the feeling that you must have missed an episode, you'll be right. The previous episode was only shown on NBC.COM.

This sounds like an excellent show. I just checked out a torrent site, and I see there's an episode (God is a Comedian), that never aired because it was too violent.

I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the heads-up Robman.

I am enjoying this show, too! So, Robman is probably right...it will get canceled! Thanks for the heads-up on the missed episode! I'm going to watch it right now.

With a last name of Kehoe and a nickname of "Black Jack", I am going to have to check this out !

Thanks for the headsup !

Didn't record it Monday because I was already recording CSI Miami and The Riches. Seems like a great time to get away.....

I really hate to say "I told you so" on this one, but it's true, NBC has canceled this show...

I wonder if a cable network would pick it up. It'd be a great show for FX.

I had the same reaction. I guess it's a good thing I heeded Rob's warning about cancellation. I didn't get attached to it.

Apparently they are going to stream it via NBC.COM

I like the show a lot, but unlike Kidnapped and Day Break, what would be the end of it such that having some final episodes online would satisfy me?

I don't think they're going to try and wrap up the story, so to speak, I think they'll just be showing the un-aired episodes. So, if you enjoyed it and you want to see a little more before it vanishes into the black hole where most of the other good shows end up, you can do so by watching it online.

Decision isn't surprising, particularly after the skein tripped through another third-place finish Monday at 10 p.m. It averaged a weak 2.0/5 rating among adults 18-49, losing a big chunk of its "Deal or No Deal" lead-in.

For any show loosing to "Deal or No Deal" is simply pathetic for US audience.
"Deal or No Deal" is the most brainless show ever invented (with the exception of "Let's Make a Deal" years ago).

I am amazed it lasted as long as it did....

Agreed. I love this show. Oh well not the first stupid decision by the network hacks.

On the bright side, NBC did renew "30 Rock" and presumably "Friday Night Lights." Both are decent shows with lousy ratings. I think it makes more sense for them to take a chance on 30 Rock and FNL than Donnellys.

I'm anxious to see what they'll end up doing with "Studio 60."

Studio 60/Black Donnellys
Same show-different set of morons.

Probably ignore it in hopes that it just goes away without anyone noticing
