Ed's Note: Matt Helgeson, senior editor over at Game Informer, just dropped us a line to let us know that the story is in fact true. As a rule they don't post fake news stories in their April mag. So go celebrate.

Great news overall, I'm glad all that rumormilling turned out to be true. I may actually try to sell my 360 to get the new one, mainly because I'd like the HDMI for Dolby TrueHD for my (white... damnit!) HD-DVD add-on. (and no I don't have a TrueHD capable receiver YET, but I will once the price drops).

I will probably try to make good on my BestBuy replacement plan, being my 360 has had issues (it almost ALWAYS fails to boot the first try, sometimes with an E-74 error), but I doubt they'll let me pay the difference for a different SKU.

Also, I honestly don't know if this includes the die shrink or not. No one has mentioned it yet, but hopefully it does.

I want an HDMI 360 not for ME but for the people that just go on and on and on and ON about it being "needed? Please MS make those poor souls happy and release one already.

I hear you... overall I'm more intrigued by the prospect of a bigger HDD than the HDMI itself, although it doesn't interest me for getting the most out of my HD-DVD add-on (once I pick up an HDMI capable TrueHD receiver anyway )

But for new buyers this is a nice option, especially with strong rumors that a premium price drop is in the works as well. Additionally, HDMI on the unit would enable DVD upscaling for people who don't have/want VGA.

Finally, as I mentioned in the OP, we don't know one way or the other if this includes the die shrink, but if it does... that's a big plus as well.

Personally though, I'm kind of mad it's black, I really like the white 360.
Hmm not sure how I feel about the black. Sony raised the bar for black with the PS3. The finish just looks GREAT. Right now my 360 in the living room is one shelf above the PS3 and it has a shiny black skin on it and a silver faceplate (Matches the Plasma trip perfectly). I think a flat black 360 would just look bad next to the shiny PS3. White is not the answer but neither is a flat black.

While being cautious about it, I call magazine April fools.

I won't accept it's official until it appears on xbox.com, majornelson, and/or gamerscore.

I guess next will be the separate 120 drive for $200 but how do you transfer everything?

No way people will buy a 120G drive for $200. Data is movable through the memory cards though (profiles as well). Anything larger would be download material that you could just download again.

Actually, I think the article states it will be available for under $200, which most likely means $199. The whole thing seems way overpriced IMO.

For once I'm taking an editors comment at face value (which I'm assuming you didn't miss in the OP).

He says they don't post fake stuff in their April issue, and I choose to believe him. Whether or not I come out looking like a moron later is a different story
post #10 of 72
I also call fake or April fools, I'll believe it when it appears on xbox.com or any official announcement.

Great. And then lose your ability to play arcade games unless you're online.
people bought the core system only to by the 20G for $100 so why wouldnt they over price this drive as well

so I could use my external drive and transfer all at once, cool

That should be a simple software fix. Whether they will do one or not...
IF this is in fact true, then I'll give in and get it. I don't care so much about HDMI (although nice) but I want that hard drive. And my current 360 has occasional hiccups.

I'm worried about all my XBLA games now.

At worst... you'd have to re-download them.

Live purchases are tied to your gamertag account, just clear the old drive (if you planned on selling it) and re-download everything to your new drive.

The only concern should be saved game files.
Well, as soon as the new drive is available, I assume that it will be possible to make your own drive - using the same method as with the current size.

Nope. You have to be online or spend quite a bit of time talking to MS.

It hasn't been fixed in a year and a half; I don't see them fixing it now. Wish they would, but mine is online 99% of the time anyway so no biggie at the moment.
Everything on the HD thats not LIVE related can be transfered over prob with XSATA. which works really well, even game saves itll transfer.

I just bought my 360 so the only thing i would kinda care about is the 120gb HD. But honestly you can buy a huge 300gb drive from like newegg for cheap now. The built in HDMI is cool.

I love the black 360 tho. Nice and shiny i hope.
I hope this is true. I would love HDMI for the HD DVD add-on as well as upscaling SD DVDs and 1080p games. Hopefully it will be quieter than my white 360. I'm sure I could sell my white 360 for a couple hundred dollars. Or just give it to my roommate's nephew who has been saving up for the 360 since it came out.

ahh... thanks for that rdank, I was unaware of that issue.

Granted, I don't remember a time in recent memory that I was on my 360 when my internet was down, but that's still a big issue.

However let's hope (no matter how futile) that if they're going to come out with a larger HDD add-on separately, that they're seriously looking into/already have a solution to transfer sensitive data. Not that it would surprise me if they didn't, but I'll be optimistic about that one
post #21 of 72
IMHO the folks who want a larger HDD are not really thinking this through. When it comes to storing media, especially HD media 120G is not a lot of space, 500G is NOT a lot of space. These files add up FAST. We should all be hoping for the use of USB drives to save and read from instead. That is the only way you will ever have sufficient affordable space for HD.

While I agree Frank... that's really just bordering on silly at this point.

Sure some people store things forever, and go download crazy (Hell I've had a TB of data on local drives at one time already, but I eventually clean them up).

However for most, the 20GB (13GB) is already enough, only those that make extreme use of downloadable media should ever run into a problem, and we'd be talking a LOT of downloads to max that out.

If you want interconnectivity, then you're already using WMP11 to stream audio/video to the 360, so that storage isn't an issue.

120GB is more than sufficient for the majority of users.

Totally agree. Hard Drive space is becoming fairly cheap, so offering up this new 360 seems pointless to me. If they want it to be a serious 'multi-media' machine then they need to allow a larger hard drive to be connected. But of course that will never happen.

If true, I'll be trying to sell my 360 and get another.
So does this come with the HD-DVD drive built in or not? $479 without a HD-DVD drive wouldn't be a very good deal.

Another question is will the system be able to do the lossless codecs as intended for movies and will some future games do lossless sound as well?

Also, will there be a HDMI dongle for current owners?

I'm going to have to check to see if my replacement warranty was for 1 year or 2.

According to the article (the second image) it does not include HD DVD playback.

Doh, didn't notice the 2nd scan at first. Thanks.
If the premium stays at $400 then $479 is a good price for a 90gb hard drive upgrade. (I mean, no its NOT, but at microsoft pricing of $99 for 20gb, its a GOOD price!)

But without a HD-DVD drive inside its a lateral move.........HDMI? Who cares.
its great that it includes the HDMI cables.
