with the future release of blu ray players that have hdmi 1.3 that decode dts-hd, dolby digital plus, true dolby hd, etc. will i still need hdmi 1.3 receiver to take advantage of the full capabilities? or will the blu ray player be suffieceint? basically what im asking is if my onkyo receiver will pass the signal through it or will i have to upgrade to a 1.3 receiver?

No, you cannot experience the new audio formats with legacy digital connections like digital optical or coax.

If your Onkyo has a 5.1 analog input, you can use that. But you've got to use HDMI or 5.1 analog, because the 10-year-old optical and coax connections -- as implemented -- don't have the bandwidth to support the new and improved audio on Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

Note you can still use your old receiver, as all disks include Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, or LPCM 2.0 stereo for backward compatibility with older hardware. However, in order to experience the new and improved Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and/or uncompressed audio, you need either a HDMI receiver, or a receiver with 5.1 analog audio input.
