If you are using a external DAC, you dont need a expensive CD player for a transport. Marantz or Onkyo make some good ones in the $200-350 price range. If you really what one in the price range, I would suggest a Arcam CD73 for about $600.

KBI,

If you're dead-set on using the Benchmark DAC-1 soley as a DAC, I would get a dedicated transport (used). There are a lot of options out there - I'd temporarily use a PC/laptop or even DVD player as a transport and keep your eye out for a tranport using the Pioneer stable platter, or Philips pro.

You may be surprised by the PC as transport, too.

Thank you Steve..I'm looking at the Music Hall 25.2..Demo model...I'm using headphones by the way.. How is the HD DVD player as a CD player? I can get a great price for it, & would like to kill 2 birds with one stone.. The DAC1 scales greatly with better CD players.. There was a noticable improvment when I used my Sony 595 instead of my Zenith 318..
