The Matrix hits HD DVD May 22. BD release "later" - Page 3

This box set will look real good next to my Mission:Impossible box set.

There is no way in hell I'm going to wait an extra month or two for the BD version. If Warner includes a TrueHD track on the HD DVD version but leaves PCM off the BD, I think there's a good chance we're gonna see World War 3.

LPCM was an interim solution provided so HD-DVD didn't outperform BD on audio.

That's good to hear, actually. Advanced codecs = more space for additional material + higher resolution audio and higher video bitrates.

I just want this trilogy in the best audio and video possible. The Blu-ray version would've been more convenient for my collection. If Warner doesn't release both versions with equal specs (see Happy Feet), then HD-DVD it is.

I also hope that one day I won't have to keep waiting months for a movie to come out on another format to know where I'm going to spend my money.

"As of now nothing has changed. WB still intends to release all future HD releases at the same time. I have heard nothing about this release on HD-DVD for May 22nd. I will let you know tomorrow if I hear anything."

My contact at WB said in an email several days ago that something big was coming down the pike for HD-DVD. I guess this was that something big.

We got stuck buying a combo almost 40-60% more than the BRD. I own both, but bought combo, because I can watch it on every other DVD player in my house. Bash if you want, but at least be fair on the price point, HDDVD, got murdered compared to BRD.

Because a lot of people have both players and the BD is cheaper, so?

Same story here. Out of TV's in 4 rooms only 2 have HD Optical the rest are plain old DVD (bedrooms). When people are sick that is where they watch the movies at. Combos work well in that instance, course they do complain about flipping sides when they put the wrong side in... Sigh.

Burbank, California (March 22, 2007) -- If ever a film series was meant to be seen in HD DVD, that series is now here. The Matrix, the legendary, groundbreaking sci-fi film, and its visually dazzling second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were produced with future technology execution in mind. The Matrix, the first DVD to sell one million copies and to date a $1 billion worldwide franchise, will be part of two new definitive high definition collections to be released by Warner Home Video and Village Roadshow Pictures on May 22.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection, for the hardcore Matrix fan, presents the complete adventures of machine battling truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in all three of the Wachowski brothers' post-modern epic films. The Matrix Series on HD-DVD is the definitive and ultimate film compilation for the ultimate hi-def format, plus will no doubt make the ultimate Father's Day gift for sci-fi film lovers. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

The Films
The Matrix (1999)
The box-office sensation follows the trials of a young computer programmer (Keanu Reeves) searching to determine the deepest reality of a post-Apocalyptic world. His journey uncovers a web of deceit and massive computer-generated illusions obscuring the truth. As the character Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) said to Neo (Reeves), No one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself. The same is true for this mind-blowing movie.
The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and was produced by Joel Silver. The Matrix was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, who spent years nurturing and refining the movie's breakthrough concepts.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
In the powerful second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Moss) and Morpheus (Fishburne) lead the revolt against the Machine Army as it attacks Zion, the last human city on earth, unleashing their arsenal of extraordinary skills and weaponry against the systematic forces of repression and exploitation. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo's pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

What is The Matrix? The question is not yet fully answered. And it leads to another: Who created The Matrix? The answers lead to more worlds of bold possibility - and to a destiny that passes from revelations to Revolutions.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
In the powerful final chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves) takes another step forward in the quest for truth that began with his journey into the real world at the outset of The Matrix - but that transformation has left him drained of his power, adrift in a no-man's land between the Matrix and the Machine World. While Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) holds vigil over Neo's comatose body, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) grapples with the revelation that the One in which he has invested a life's worth of faith is merely another system of control invented by the architects of the Matrix. During the stunning conclusion, the rebel's long quest for freedom culminates in an explosive battle. As the Machine Army wages devastation on Zion, its citizens mount an aggressive defense - but can they stave off the relentless swarm of Sentinels long enough for Neo to harness the full extent of his powers and end the war?

I already own all three on SD DVD.

I will not buy any boxed set, as it is too expensive to buy two movies that I would not pay more than 10 bucks for.

If the original Matrix movie is released in Blu-ray, I will pick it up. I can wait forever for this to happen.

Not going to buy any HD DVD's
Not going to buy any Matrix boxed sets.

When does the official release come out? I still can't believe this is true!
Never bought the last two, haven't even seen the third, been years since I sold the first. I'll pick them up, just a matter of which format...

If you are that is perfectly fine. That is the position I have taken when BD supporters have constantly attacked Warner for the release differences, audio differences, and THD. I was only speculating on "The Matrix" because it is quite interesting that after waiting for this title from Warner for so long, they decide to finally release it, same date as POTC, and no BD date announced?

As far as I know, Warner strives to be impartial. I've heard this was a directive from top management, although a lot of the guys we talk to in the "trenches" there often have a bias for one or the other format (We like to think ours is more popular ). The difficulties I've heard about in BD-J development were related to getting code to work the same across all players, and, of course, the lack of support for the features they want to use.

I won't say there wasn't the normal pressure from the HD DVD companies for Warner to release their IME titles as soon as they could (We've had check discs for one high profile title since before July 2006 that still hasn't been released), but I would seriously doubt there were any "backroom deals" as you put it.

From that press release, what is this "side one" and "side two" business?

Edit: Ah, I see. Double sided discs. I missed that initially.

This is huge news. Great news. While I buy on both formats I always choose HD DVD over BD.
FatiusJeebs... ugh. Aren't people flagging posts these days that these should still be in here?

Anyway this is definitely good news for HD DVD - I've been dismissive of their cheaper players, but coupled with a high profile software offering like this, it gets a little more potent. So... the fight goes on. I'll be waiting for the BD version myself (which will hopefully arrive soon afterwards), but there can be no denying that as a counterpoint to Pirates of the Caribbean, there could hardly be a better "across the aisle" title to use than this.

HD DVD Dials Up 'The Matrix' Trilogy
March 21, 2007
Take that, Blu-ray backers.

The studio that put the first HD DVD titles into stores last April has finally set a date for one of the most anticipated high definition titles first hinted at nearly a year ago today. Warner Home Video has announced 'The Complete Matrix Trilogy' and 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection' HD DVD box sets will be available May 22 for $99.99 and $119.99, respectively. Blu-ray editions are also planned but won't appear until later this year.

'The Complete Matrix Trilogy' will span three discs and include each of the Matrix films along with three featurettes from 'The Matrix: Revisited' DVD. Each film will also include an Interactive Movie Experience (IME) featute exclusive to HD DVD that promises to provide additional insight into making the film through the eyes of cast and crew members.

'The Ultimate Matrix Collection' will mirror its DVD counterpart and include, in addition to the three IME features found in 'The Complete Matrix Trilogy,' 35 hours of bonus material and 'The Anamatrix' short film - all spanning five double-sided discs. The announcement does not indicate if any of the bonus material is presented in 1080p, though we have to believe 'The Anamatrix' at the very least should be presented in high defintiion.

Check back regularly for official high resolution artwork of each edition.

Nice, but that's way too rich for my blood.
I'm not interested in The Matrix Series. I just never "got" it. That being said, this is great news or all of us since it means neither BD'ers nor HD DVD'ers will have to put up with the TotalHD garbage Warner Bros. has planned...at least not on these titles.

Here's hoping that all of WBs "big" releases come out on the respective discs for each format...and not TotalHD.

We've all dodged a bullet here folks.

I'm not wild about these being double sided discs.

If there's no alternative, it's not going to stop me from buying it. But I'd always prefer single sided.

I wonder.... maybe the BD release will take advantage of the extra 20 gigs and do single sided releases instead of double siders? If so, that would be enough for me to wait for the BD.

I just hope there is more info from Warner Brothers about the BD before 5/22.

Probably also held up by Blu-ray's version of IME not being ready. I've said before that they better hurry it up. BB and the Matrix series are big boons to HD DVD.
