DVD Menus on 235:1 - Post your pics

Hey guys! I tried using my Mitsubishi 3000U (which has 2.35:1 lens built in) and when I am at the DVD menu, it's cutting off the top and the bottom. Is this something I can't change or am I doing something wrong here? Please post pics. Thanks

DVDs are 16:9, the black bars only give the appearance of 235. The menu text and graphics are printed with 16:9 geometry and uses, or can use the full screen. Basically there is nothing yoy can do. I believe there are some DVD players that do let you raise the subtitles independantly of the image but thats about your lot. I find it a small price to pay

It depends on the disc. I noticed that the SW (4 to 6) films have all the needed info in the scope area. If it is a real problem for you then I suggest that you simply push the 4 x 3 option on the projector and you will have an optically stretched 16:9 image at full height of the source.

Sorry for the crap snap, I couldn't pause it and I didn't white balance before taking the shot...

The other option is to use the full 16:9 panel and stretch the menu. Yes the geometry will be incorrect, but is that really important for a menu?

Nothing else to add except that hopefully as 2.35 becomes more popular, the studios will have menus in the picture area.

OK, so I'm not the only one with the whole Menu issue here. In that case, I dont' need to build a lens. The one built in my projector does the job. What I need to do is get a larger screen and I guess mask and that should give me the proper picture I am looking for. I will get some screen shots between the 16:9 and 235. You guys would be able to tell me if what I am doing is correct. Thanks to the experts :-)

Most people use the "4:3" squeeze mode for the menus which restores the full 16:9 image while the lens is in place. I don't believe your projector has this however...so you'd have to buy a scaler.

The HC3000U does not have an anamorphic lens built in.

Most projectors have a setting that will play the full 2:35 movie, it just has the black bars above and below the picture, some people can zoom out to push the black bars off the screen, and give a bigger picture, [called the poor man's CIH set up] but doing this you are not using your projectors full panel and you lose some light, and often focus as well.

The idea of CIH with a HE anamorphic lens is that you use a mode on projector, or DVD player or separate scaler that stretches the picture to be too tall, eveyone tall and thin, then the anamorphic lens you put in front of the projector stretches the picture back into proper shape and a large picture that fills your screen and uses all your projectors panel giving a much better picture overall.
It sounds like you are basically trying to do the poor man's CIH. which is fine many of us do till we could get the lens of choice.

Use the 4x3 mode on the scaler/projector, or put the lens in passthrough mode.

Then when the movie starts flick over to stretch mode.
