Matrix Trilogy Coming to HD DVD in May

This can only be a good thing for HD DVD. It must be said that it will be coming to Blu-ray as well sometime in 2007 or 2008

Yes! YEs! YEs! YES!!

This has got to be the most comprehensive release of the Matrix Trilogy ever contemplated. I think there are EIGHT (8) sides in total with more material than ever released.

I am going to be fighting in the aisles for this one.

The prophecy has indeed come true!

Warner Bros. to Bring Out The Matrix Collection on HD-DVD May 22!

"It is sort of ironic that in The Matrix Neo had to choose between the red or the blue pill. Who would know that years later those colors would represent dueling next generation DVD formats?

If ever a film series was meant to be seen in HD DVD, that series is now here. The Matrix, the legendary, groundbreaking sci-fi film, and its visually dazzling second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were produced with future technology execution in mind. The Matrix, the first DVD to sell one million copies and to date a $1 billion worldwide franchise, will be part of two new definitive high definition collections to be released by Warner Home Video and Village Roadshow Pictures on May 22.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection, for the hardcore Matrix fan, presents the complete adventures of machine battling truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in all three of the Wachowski brothers' post-modern epic films. This collection will contain, for the first time, all three HD DVD versions of The Matrix series with more than 35 hours of bonus material in 5 double sided discs. The second offering, The Complete Matrix Trilogy, contains HD DVD versions of the three Matrix films in a 3-disc set, perfect for new and current Matrix fans who just want to see all three Matrix films in hi-definition.

Both The Ultimate Matrix Collection and The Complete Matrix Trilogy come with the In-Movie Experience (IME), an exclusive interactive feature that allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material while the movie is running. For these titles, the IME will let viewers experience via picture in picture the evolution of all The Matrix's ground breaking elements through the recollections of the cast and creative team.

The Matrix Series on HD-DVD is the definitive and ultimate film compilation for the ultimate hi-def format, plus will no doubt make the ultimate Father's Day gift for sci-fi film lovers. The Ultimate Matrix Collection will be available for $119.99 SRP and The Complete Matrix Trilogy available for $99.99 SRP. Order due date for all is April 17. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

The Franchise and The Films:

The Matrix film franchise is one of Warner Home Video's largest and most prestigious, having grossed more than one billion dollars worldwide. All three films are in the top ten best-selling sci-fi films of all time and have been nominated and won numerous awards, including four Oscars. The Matrix was the first film on DVD to sell more than one million units during the launch of the DVD format.

The Matrix (1999):

The box-office sensation follows the trials of a young computer programmer (Keanu Reeves) searching to determine the deepest reality of a post-Apocalyptic world. His journey uncovers a web of deceit and massive computer-generated illusions obscuring the truth. As the character Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) said to Neo (Reeves), "No one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself." The same is true for this mind-blowing movie.

The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and was produced by Joel Silver. The Matrix was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, who spent years nurturing and refining the movie's breakthrough concepts.

In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo's pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

While Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) holds vigil over Neo's comatose body, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) grapples with the revelation that the One in which he has invested a life's worth of faith is merely another system of control invented by the architects of the Matrix. During the stunning conclusion, the rebel's long quest for freedom culminates in an explosive battle. As the Machine Army wages devastation on Zion, its citizens mount an aggressive defense - but can they stave off the relentless swarm of Sentinels long enough for Neo to harness the full extent of his powers and end the war?

Of course, they're not flippers. They are double sided discs, one side with the movie, one side with extras.

You take the disc out of the packaging, and place it into your player. For the next n hours you enjoy the movie.

Calm down.
I still don't see the big deal. As long as the movie fits on one side....what does it matter?
There they go with the flipper argument again. They are double sided. Normally those extras would be on another disc. So it just save some space. Youd have to open the tray either way to see the extras, so what's the big deal? NOTHING!

Guys,

It seemed the other thread got pulled for whatever reason. Snark attacks no doubt (I am showing my age.) Hopefully this one will not devolve.
Does anybody know if there will be any deleted scenes, alternate endings/scenes, etc.? That would make me very curious to see the expanded collection. Otherwise the movies alone will suit me fine.

I'm not seeing it up there, I think I must be missing it, but the Ultimate Collection SHOULD have the Enter the Matrix scenes, which were 23 in total, some of them that really add to the Reloaded story. Possibly in the Zion Archives? I forget where they are at in my DVD set.
Hmm, the Enter the Matrix scenes should fall in the extras for Reloaded. To me it seems like those are gonna be left out, cause I don't see it listed!

If Animatrix is not HD, I'll probably get the regular set and put the HD discs into my Limited Ed. DVD Collectors Edition. I'd still have the snazzy packaging that way too. I'd have to make sure I am not missing anything, though.

What an ignorant post. You don't have to flip it to watch the movie. So, what exactly is the problem?

What a whiner. Take your "no flippers" crusade somewhere else.

No TrueHD soundtrack? There'd better be.

Yea, i sure hope so to. Fingers crossed

It's unfortunate that all of the extras will be standard def, but I assume that is to assure we will rebuy the whole thing again in 5 years or so. If anything The Animatrix deserved to be 1080p. But either way I'm very excited to get this set.

I really really hope there is on all the movies other wise I will think twice before I buy it...

I know it's only audio but in this movie thats one of the biggest parts!

I still am hoping for 5 star video and audio on these movies!!!!

It looks like the Animatrix is not HD, so I will buy the regular set and put the HD discs into my sd dvd ultimate box.

Double sided discs are still flippers because:

1. There is no cover art
2. Both sides are easily scratchable

ANd I refuse to buy them now. I am sick of double sided/flipper discs. Oh well, I'll just have to wait a few more months for the BR versions then. That is cool, saves me $100.

Two things. Are the second sides like HD30/HD30 or HD30/HD15 or are they HD30/DVD9? If they are HD/HD then this is great the first realization of 60GB discs.

If the second side is available only on the Ultimate version does that mean that the regular version doesn't have flippers.

Actually a Third thing, I don't know about everyone else But I personally love Double sided discs. I hate have to fold out TV series like their a Playboy centerfold just to get to disc 7 of 9. And has anyone here ever gotten ahead of themselves and got the new disc out then ejected their player. Try keeping you spot open on the fold out while trying to get on disc out while having the new disc ready to put into the player in the other hand. I was so happy when I got House season 1 and they actually used DVD-18 I got to watch twice as many episodes without feeling I was in a circus, and it was 10x easier to navigate the discs their cases, and I think it also helps give them breathing room to maybe up the bit rates as much.

so what exactly is new with this ultimate collection? i have the sd ultimate collection, and now we know none of the extras are HD, is there really a point buying this over the trilogy set? for arguement sake, let's assume animatrix is not in HD as alot of people pointed out.

It targets those people who have to have everything in one set, or those people who have not bought the SD-DVD version of the Ultimate Matrix.

If the animatrix is indeed SD, then I will buy just the Trilogy set and keep my SD-DVD Ultimate Matrix set.

I do like the options they are presenting: they could have annoyed everyone and just released the Ultimate Matrix HD set now, then the Trilogy set in four or five months.

IMHO, YMMV,

Yes, I guess its true-some people just gaze at their discs lovingly, when they aren't being played. Perhaps they are displayed in a glass case so everyone can see the labels...

I have yet to scratch an HD DVD or even a DVD (though a few DVDs arrived scratched). One has to be rather clumsy to scratch them.

So the BR version is free? You know the BR version probably won't have lossless audio.
To each his own.

If the second side is the extras, then they will be HD30/DVD9.

Since these are flippers I am boycotting all HD DVD releases. How dare they! This is a total slap in the face!

How dare Warner deny me of my age-old passion of staring at disc art for hours on end.

TotalHD? More like TotalCRAP!
Great news for HD-DVD and for Matrix fans. I'll probably get the 3 disc set unless the Ultimate Edition has Animatrix in HD.
