HTPC Gaming and full screen

Hello,

- I am using a Radeon X1900XT connected through a HDMI->DVI-D cable.
- Audio connected to my Home Theater System (HTS) using 3.5mm to 3-RCA cables in the Multi-In (I don't know why, but I don't have bass... woohoo... ).

I have a question about resolution with my Panasonic TH-42PX60U. I've tried many resolutions (1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x1024...) and none seems to fully expand to the size of my TV. There's a 1 inch black border all around the image. It bothers me. If I remind well, when I first installed my setup, I think I could get a full screen image with some resolutions, but I could be mistaken. And I mostly wonder why I just can't anymore.

Someone can help me?

TV Spec:
Panasonic TH-42PX60U (Plasma)

Home Theater System:
Sony HT-DDW900

Computer Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 3.2GHz (400x8)
Radeon X1900XT@Stock speed
Seagate 7900.10 320G SATAII Drive
Cheap mouse/keyboard (my next upg I guess)
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS (I won't talk about my bass problem with my HTS)

Your using fullscreen resolutions on a widescreen TV. Since your set is not automatically adjusting, you might have to adjust the pic size with your sets remote if it has it). Otherwise you might have to use widescreen resolutions or your drivers may have options to adjust the overscan/underscan.

That's about as far as I can go, others may know better.

The specs on your set list 1024x76 resolution as max...?

No, 1024x768 isn't the max resolution, that is just the native resolution, the display will accept and downscale higher resolutions just fine. As for overscaning, some TVs do that on VGA inputs for some strange reason. I pretty sure you can adjust it from the service menu on those models, might be worth a look.

The problem seems to be the Catalyst drivers. If I remove them, my image is full screen. I guess there's an option to adjust the size. I'll have a look.

I have the same problem and it is driving me crazy. Is there any solution apart from removing catalyst?

I have a X1900XT using DVI-D to HDMI and the latest catalyst drivers installed on Vista Premium.

Help much appreciated.

Problem solved with powerstrip.

First off allow monitor to view unsupported resolutions. Now set to 1920 x 1080. Reset the pc and now you should be in 1080. Now go into powerstrip and set up a custom profile. For me I picked 1280 x 720 DTV and I set it to 50Hz. Now it should be full screen. I checked in my display manager and it is showing 75Hz @ 1280x 720. My display doesnt accept 75Hz but powerstrip is knocking it down to 50Hz. When I try and put windows display manager to 60Hz the picture shrinks back down to the bordered format which is causing us problems.

I hope this solves your problems.

I solved my problem differently.

I set an HDTV resolution (1280x720) in the Catalyst setup and then created a custom resolution of 1237x696 (talk about a weird resolution...). I now play full screen with most games (some games like Marvel doesn't run custom resolutions).

Thanks for the help!

I am glad you found a work around. I have bought this product to forward the EDID from my display. I am now just waiting for it to arrive.

The reason I did this is that my amp/receiver sometimes sends out the wrong EDID info which is why I am getting the boarder around the picture in the first place (works fine with a direct connection to my dispay). Sometimes when i switch my receiver and display on the settings default to the incorrect setting and I have to reset it all up again (not hard but a pain) This box I bought should remove this process and I should be able to run without the use of custom resolutions and powerstrip. It should be with me by the end of next week. I will post here and let you know if it solves the issue and gives me 1:1 pixel mapping.

The product is called DVI detective and retails for $69.99

BTW the way I set mine up, in the above post all games run fine. You can create custom res for most games, use this site for instructions on how to to do it for each games.
