When you listened to them, what did you think?
Particularly the Beethoven Baby Grands and/or concert grands?
After some extensive listening in a store (in an untreated room) but with my own electronics I really liked these speakers. But I was listening at higher DB levels and didn't really take the time to listen at lower levels.
I'm building a 5.1 system and I like action movies, sci-fi, rock and roll and the like. Because I like higher SPL levels I tend to not like real bright speakers, but I worry I could end up with a system at home that is not as dynamic and "live" like as I want.
I have a 17 x 13 room (with the speakers on the short wall) and I've done bass treatments and reflection point treatments. I tend to listen with my ears, and not by reading reviews. But I do research a bit and I came home and it's hard to even find a review on VA speakers that mention really the stuff I listen to. It's classical, etc (and I"m sure they excel at that)
So, I know the easy answer is - well you liked it in the store with your own electronics so trust your ears... BUT I did that on my last speakers and got them home and didn't love them. Again, in the store the room was 1.5 times as big as mine, speakers on the long not the short wall (though I was able to replicate the same distances to the speakers and distance apart) I was sitting on the wall though. The room was also untreated (whereas mine is and should be calmer) and I really only listened at high spls...
So any thoughts? I'll also be buying the center and something for rears (has the tweeter changed much in the last 5 years? as I may look for used haydn's for rears).
I heard brand new Baby Grands, and Concert Grands. Amp wise, I have a 5 x 100 watt H/K amp (8 ohm), 5 x 150 (4 ohm) however it can deliver 100amps of current (claimed). It's old school Harman Kardon.
I could see down the road getting them even more juice in a 5 channel amp (space limitations dicate I'll be limited to multi channel amps) but the HK sounded pretty darn nice the other day.
Would really appreciate any thoughts. Trying to avoid bringing home speakers again that I'm unhappy with again. Also would like honest opinions if running these at 90db or so fairly often would lead to me destroying them.
