Any more Sony CRTs going to be made?

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if Sony will every make any newer CRTs than their current crop. They've already discontinued their 20" and 24" sets (their no longer available on Sony's online store), so all that's left are the 27", 32", 36", and XBR970 34" HD. I assume the two smaller ones were discontinued because they don't have ATSC tuners, which is required now.

But will Sony make any newer sets, or is this it? If this is the end, I may as well pick one of them up and see how long it will last me...But how is the quality on these last CRTs from Sony (assuming these are the last), at least on the 27"?

Thanks.

No more Sony CRTs. The last ones are on the shelves right now. They don't want to lose any more money producing CRTs that nobody wants anymore.

This question has already been answered a million times. The answer is NO.

If you want a 970 or an FS170, you should buy it now. The FS170s are pretty good. They're better than any other SDTVs. You can find good deals on the 27 right now.

Yeah, I was mainly prompted to ask this question because of some nice deals on the 27". Do you think it would be worth it to replace a Toshiba 20AF44 (Orion-made) with a KD-27FS170?

I hate how the FS170's are missing some features found in previous models, though, like audio out (although I doubt I'd set up speakers in the room, unless the built-in speakers on the TV were really bad) and the ability to turn off VSM (unless there is a way -- maybe the service menu?). Perhaps I should look for an FS120 on eBay...sigh...

I haven't really experimented with VM yet, but I know how to turn it off. VM can be set to off, low, or high with VVM in the Pallet section of the service menu, and the values for off, low, and high can be set with VMOF, VMLO, and VMHI in VP2. There are also five other VM controls in VP2.

And VM = VSM = Velocity Scan Modulation?

If it can definitely be turned off in the service menu, then I would definitely feel a lot better buying this TV.

AFAIK, Sony doesn't call it "velocity scan modulation" like Toshiba does. Sony appears to call it "Clear Edge VM wideband velocity modulation," or simply "velocity modulation." You can turn it off.
