I need some help.

I continually read on the back of my blu-ray discs, that the best sound is in uncompressed PCM 5.1.

However, when I choose this setting I get MUCH LESS sound than by using the Dolby or DTS settings.

I'm sure I've set something wrong or didn't set anything at all.

Help?

what type of player and receiver do you have?

I am not totally satified with sound of my sub.
It seems to me that it calls too much attention and that it does not melt very well with the rest of the system.
I have set the crossover for all satellites to 120Hz and the LPF of LFE to 120Hz either.
Gain is at 25% and sub level is -4,5 dB.
While it does tremendous shaking of the sofa to its left, the sound does not seem natural and too muddy.

Attached a drawing of the room and a rendering. Ceiling is 9 feet.

The rendering is somewhat old. The coffee table with the lamp on the south wall on the right of the sofa, is not there anymore. The sub is in its place.

Any suggestion is welcome.

Apologies in advance for the newb question and I hope this is in the correct thread, but I am setting up a new AVR and now have options for connecting my CD player. The player is a Marantz CD6000 OSE (about 8 years old) and I just picked up a Pio 1018 AVR. I've always used analog but now have the option of using the digital outs. I see it has 2 - one optical and one coaxial. The manual is not clear as to what the preferred connection should be. Any insights most appreciated!

Dr. Pain - Their is a thread over at HSU forum http://forum.hsuresearch.com/showthread.php?t=4003 Post #33, that gives a very good explanation on how to calibrate a true sub with a HSU MBM-12 mid bass sub. A lot of people are starting to go this route now and they need good info on how to properly these subs up. So could you include this info on this thread.

Hey all im looking for advice on what type of amp i should be looking for.

I will be using it to power two floorstanding speakers like the monitor rs6/rs8 or something similar. i will be using it for mostly music, and id like to run my Westinghouse LCD, Oppo dvd player(also as cd player), and xbox360 through it also. I do not plan to add any other speakers into the mix at this point, so does that make this a two channel system?? Also, since i will be running multiple sources through it, should i be looking at an integrated amp? That is what i have been told as it will provide more power to the speakers and as as a control center for the rest of the components.

also, I have one hdmi input on my TV, and hdmi output on all my components, do i need an amp with multiple hdmi inputs, ordoes that not matter?

I am new to this HT and I have a question. If I connect my blu-ray player with HDMI to the receiver, how can I just get sound from my tv and not 7.1? Will I have to use 2 inputs like HDMI for the receiver and component for the tv?

Now, if you could come up with a quick and effective sub placement for those 4 subs that Harman likes to talk about so that they're properly integrated, that'd be nice. As always, a hell of job Doc.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't see a simple method that the end user can employ to get the levels/phase right. Besides, is there really anything like a perfectly rectangular room for the majority of us? Regardless Doc, a hell of a job!

LOL. Yeah, I wrote that summary and it generally applies to one sub. I don't post there anymore, even under a different name because I managed to get myself booted off permanently. I saw other writings by TN where he talked about the work by Harman with respect to multiple subs and was of the general opinion that properly integrating them into the whole scheme of things was not a trivial excercise in the least with most people opting for what they thought was best without the requisite measurements. If I'm not mistaken, TN uses a series of subs in an infinite baffle approach in his home. Tom does love his low frequencies!

What about color coding key articles in the various sections for the novice. The basic stuff they need to get them going without wading into anything too technical?

I could. I also have no problem deferring to your choices. You're the originator of this useful compilation and as such ought to receive the proper recognition and not have it diffused. I simply suggested color coding which has already been adopted the US Department of Homeland Security!

First thank you for anyone who cares to reply. I hope I am placing these questions in the right place. I will shortly build a home, and I'm in the planning stages of a doing a nice setup in my family room which is 19X13. The room is connected to a wide open kitchen and nook.

The only part I am decided on at the moment is to recess the new 1080p 52 inch LCD Sammy 750 based on my research here, with the typical recessed speakers around it. My first question is because of the open house lay out, can the 2 or 3 rear speakers be ceiling mounted? Am i compromising something here with the rears by doing this?

From a design standpoint, my next question is I don't want the equipment in the same room. Does an IRC remote solve this issue? The wall bordering this room is the garage where I can have all the equipment on shelves.

And last does anyone have any links that is dedicated to flat panel decor and design?
I saw a few of the galleries but really want to go the distance and I was hoping someone knew of a designer or place where I can check out multiple setups and designs.
My fear is not knowing what to do around the TV and the speakers.
