Choppy imported video on Vista...any suggestions?

Just imported my first HDV footage from the Sony HDR-HC1 camcorder into Windows Movie Maker in Vista Ultimate. The transfer completed successfully, but when I playback the imported file in Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player, the playback is very choppy and unwatchable. My system specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon X2 4600+ Dual-Core processor
1 Gig RAM
EVGA 7950 GT video card with 512 MB memory; 101.41 driver (latest beta)
Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit

No other program running during the import and not connected to the net. Any ideas or suggestions on improving playback? BTW, my system is quite capable of playing back other HD content. WMV-HD, HD-DVD (via PowerDVD Ultra 7.1) all playback silky smooth. Not sure if this is relevant, but I also have installed the nVidia Purevideo decoder. Appreciate any input.

Wndows movie maker as well as windows media player really suck big time with HDV. You need to find a proper capture program, and the player you should use is Power dvd or Nero showtime.

Any suggestions re: capture programs for Vista? I have previously used HDVsplit in Windows XP, and I know there is a beta version available for Vista. Has anyone used this successfully? what are the other options for capture? Thanks!

I've used HDVsplit in xp and yes... it does work well.... but I have no idea if it works under vista. I usually use Vegas7 which works in both XP and Vista

The graphics and animation in Vista are memory hogs. Turn them off and run Vista ala XP and you may free up some processing power.

I used HDVSplit in Vista with my HV20, and it worked fine.

You really need to upgrade to 2GB RAM, not sure if thats the problem, but its kind of the real-world Minimum RAM spec for Vista

An update...playback of the captured file is now smooth as silk in WMP and Windows Media Center (Vista) Not sure what changed...I wonder if some program was continuously accessing the disk and that's what caused the choppy playback intially? In any case, I have since upgraded my memory to 2 GB. Captured a 50 min HDV footage last night with Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0. Haven't edited to the capture yet, but playback of the captured file was very smooth; so far so good. Will see what happens when I edit the file and try to render it.
